My Luce is six weeks old today...tomorrow is the worst day EVER
I just gave my son the last bath I will give him on my maternity leave.
from now on, his abuela will be sharing that time with him. and it kills me. He LOVES his bath. while I wash his hair he just looks at my face, totally silent, still, so trusting...just enjoying the water as it streams down his head..enjoying the little massage his scalp gets as I wash his hair...and the sensation of warmth as his body is immersed in the water that mommy knows he prefers at precisely 97 degrees F.
this is SOOOO HARD. it's criminal.
I've never envied SAHM's. I never wanted to be one and I still don't. what I DO envy is that they don't have to feel this feeling. even if it is fleeting and I get "used" to it. I WANT to work. I NEED to work. and I am working to give HIM the life I want him to have.
but ugh...this is the 7th heartbreak of my life. It REALLY hurts.
I just completed the longest stretch of time I can ever expect to have with my son, and it just was NOT enough.
FIE on you, fed govt for not offering even 4 weeks of paid leave..OR at the very least, the opportunity for Short Term Disability.
we have NEITHER afforded to us, and it SUCKS

He is beyond gorgeous
Jess, I can honestly say (what you already know) that it does get easier. I still curse the fact that I only got 12 weeks out with my boy. I'll get even less this time around with DD. But there is absolutely nothing like the smile you will get from him when you come home after a long day at work. You will LIVE for that smile. And that makes it (almost) worth it

I was home for 11 months before going back. I guess it was probably easier than having to go back so soon, but no matter when you do it, it hurts. 
ETA - now, at 2, he RUNS over to me for a big hug and kiss when I pick him up and it's the BEST!

You can still have bath time with him. I love that time and I don't get home until 6!! He is so freakin cute

I know how you feel. Today is my 2nd day back at work and i'm dying inside, its so hard. My DS is only 8 weeks. I'm doing my hospital internship and so didn't really get a real maternity leave and don't get FMLA or disablity yet. I only got 8 weeks bc it was a c-section. I don't see how this pain will subside. I miss him so much.
You can still give him a bath on weekends. My mom is giving my Joshua a bath today :(

awww, I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be - 6 weeks is not enough time and it's unfair!
You will have so many special times with him in the days to come - nothing will change that!
He is too adorable!

Awwww he is a cutie! I know how you feel. I never ever thought I would be a SAHM. I planned to go back to my job at 12 wks. Well 2 yrs later and pg with #2 I am still at home. It took me by surprise but, I just couldn't leave him!

aww! so sorry! i am sure everyone will be the first to tell you that it does get easier over time!
i can only imagine how hard this is on you! we all go through it and we can all empathize!!!
but what you do get to look forward to is coming home to your baby!!
especially as he gets older, omg you are in for a treat!!
i gotta say it is the highlight of my day.
when i get home i am greeted with the BIGGEST smile, arms and legs flailing all over the place!!
it is the best feeling in the world! and it literally rejuvenates me! i never come home tired. i switch hats and go into mommy mode! nurse her, bathe her ( every other night), cook dinner, and nurser her to sleep!
i gotta say, i love this double life and all the juggling! i feel like it makes me a better mom and wife!
good luck!!!! i know it is hard!!!

I totally get what you're saying. I never wanted to be a SAHM, but right before i had to go back, i just hated that feeling. Just knowing that that special time of just the 2 of you together completely & uninterupted, feeling separated from the rest of reality, was over was heartbreaking.
For me, going to work is easy. I cried for 3 hours right before i left for my first night back, and that was the last time i was sad about it (though i did also change my work situation and am basically home with DD everyday), but i look back on that time with her fondly b/c it was such an amazing time in our lives

Jess, I know it's hard!! There isn't anything we can say to make it better, but honestly i've been back at work a month now and it's starting to get a bit easier. Sienna is with her abuela all day too so I know she is in great hands.
I still give her baths, we do it right before bed every other night and I love that time with her.

I agree.
The nighttime baths I give my kids and reading time with them are the moments I live for.
Its hard..so hard...but i really try to have fun in the morning with them and then when I come home. Dont clean...just have fun with him until he goes to bed!!!!

I wont give up the bath either and do it at night.
Once he gets older he will get dirty during the day and I love having her all clean and snuggly before bed.
Hang in there. It is SO hard, but it is also SO rewarding to work. At the end of the night I sit down and feel SO accomplished afteer the craziness of getting home, doing dinner, taking care of her, bathing her, putting her to bed etc etc etc.
