Do you think some Democrats DON'T vote in NY (or supporting Obama) b/c they assume NY is a democratic state?
I feel like I've heard more than once "it doesn't matter if I vote b/c my guy will win this state..."

Lots of NYers feel this way; Myself included but I still like to exercise my right to vote

Maybe. I think there are also a lot of Republicans who don't vote in NY b/c they feel like the state will always go Blue.
ETA -- I think a lot of people feel their vote does not count because of the electoral college also. (I'm not giving MY opinion on the electoral college - it's just a common theme that comes up every time we have a Presidential election.)

I think it's sad when there's a "why bother?" attitude on either side, for something so important.

From what I've seen and heard today, NYers are out in force. I don't know anyone who's not voting.
I do see having that attitude, but it's dangerous if we all felt that way.
I just love the fact that I get to have my say, win or lose.

Definitely, and I think there are Republicans who don't either because they think their vote just won't matter.

I know one person who doesn't vote because she is a Republican and feels that NY will always go Democrat.
I think she's crazy. That would be MORE of a reason for me to vote.

Apathy gets you nowhere. Regardless of whether the state goes red or blue, I still believe in the right to vote, and that it should be exercised if you so choose.
The other day a friend and I got into a discussion over voting and all that. He stopped me cold when he said he was exercising his right NOT to vote, after I'd lectured him on WHY he should vote. I have to say, it finally made sense to me. Did I agree with him? NO. But I saw his point, understood his view, and respect that.

I would hope not, we have our local senators & assemblymen to vote for too, and they have a HUGE impact on our day to day lives by creating NYS laws.

I would say probably more Republicans that don't vote b.c of the feeling of why bother.
This is another reason it is funny when people put who are you voting for on these boards b.c there is an assumption that since NY is very democratic area that those polls won't mean much.

Same here. I have 3 friends in CA, all republicans who feel the same way as I do living in NY. Short of a miracle a Republican candidate will never win NY or CA, unless Regan is raised form the dead.
We all agree that exercising our right to vote is important so we do it knowing our candidate will never win in our states. More of a reason to do away with the electoral college, IMHO. I would love it if we as a country actually had the popular vote count towards electing the next president. Then, if you are a Dem in a Rep state or vice versa you would feel as if your vote really does count, KWIM?

Good point! I do vote in all local elections as well and feel my vote has more impact there.

the curious thing about that logic is the presumption that only one race matters... what about state and local elections... those are not always leaning blue....

people have reasons why they don't vote.
I think even if you are the ONLY person in your state that votes a certain way, you should STATE that.
doing nothing gets you NOwhere.
at least doing something brings you hope.

Re: Do you think some Democrats DON'T vote in NY (or supporting Obama) b/c they assume NY is a democratic state?
The other thing is that there are other positions to vote for other than President, and in some cases, those races are far from decided. So you would miss out on selecting State Senators, Congressional Represntatives, etc. These folks probably have more of a day to day impact on many of us, though they tend to get forgotten in a presidential election year.

I vote, although I know we're going blue, at least for the President. I do think it would be more exciting to live in a swing state, where you know your vote truly means something.
