Do you think that health insurance should be free?
I wish it was, why do we have to pay exorbitant prices to be treated if we are sick? other countries do it, why can't we?

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
After having some family living in Canada who could not get help when sick, I think nationalized health care is definitely not perfect. The system was so flooded with people seeking medical help that you could not get help when it was needed. Not as many people want to become doctors there since they do not make as much as doctors can here. Taxes are a great deal higher since it is really all covered by your taxes. At least I can get help here when I need it, even if I pay high insurance premiums for it. There my aunt who died of cancer actually paid a doctor privately when she couldn't get the help she needed in a hospital.

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
I rather pay crazy premiums and have great health care then pay nothing and not have the best. New York is known to have some of the best doctors, specialists, hospitals... Would't that change if it were all free? If it wouldnt compromise the care I could recieve Id put my vote in for free medical too!

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
Doesn't Canada have free health insurance? I hear it's a BIG mess. I think insurance should have broader coverage. I also think prescribed meds shouldn't be so ridiculously expensive.

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
No, I don't think it should be free. The quality of health care plummets when it is free. A lot of people will go off the books for care and pay just as much, if not more than if they had health insurance.

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
fine, not necessarily free but that is more accesible, so if I have no insurance and I'm very sick, are they going to let me die? not right.

I thought no one can be denied medical care, isn't that why there are clinics and city/county hospitals (like ER)

I'm not sure I heard of cases in the past but I mean not everyone can afford health insurance.

but I always thought that you would still get care with or without medical insurance - I don't know much about this topic but isn't that why we have medicaid?

That's how it is in the Philippines. My Aunt needed surgery and we paid for it. If she didn't get it, she would have died. My cousins husband has health insurance through his job, but he said since the policy is SO limited, and the care is so crappy, he might as well just pay out of pocket for his care. His insurance (he works for a bank) also does not offer for him to buy insurance for my cousin and his two children.
ETA: and to have health insurance is REALLY rare over there.

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
Nothing is free- Canadians pay for their health insurance via taxes. There is no free lunch anywhere- the money has to come from somewhere.
With that said- the current health insurance system we have in this country is terrible. We need some type of government involvement, whether this is nationalization I don't know- but we need to get health insurance costs to come down. Premiums are constantly going up- if this continues- more and more companies will either not offer health insurance, or make employees pay for it out-of-pocket.
Even though the Canadian program is flawed (isn't ours too?) the costs are actually LOWER than the American program- so they have "free" healthcare, and yet, it costs less $$$ per annum than the American program.
there was just an op-ed in the times about this. Apparently either Honda or Toyota was deciding where to build a new factory- a lot of Northern states were competing for this factory to be built in their state. Canada won because the company figured that it would cost less money for their health costs- it's too expensive here in the US.

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
Well even Medicaid you have to make very little, almost borderline poor to qualify for it.

Right- if something is majorily wrong with you- but would about advanced care- or new treatments- you can't get those things if you dont' have health insurance. If you are poor, you basically get the lowest level treatment- nothing aggressive or new...
Is that right? I don't think so. Not to mention- I don't think drugs are free..... (although I'm not sure).
Heathcare is a basic human right... in our society- where people are basically wasting money every day- we can't take care of our sick properly- it is very, very sad.

I was told that medical centers must treat you and they can never send you to a collection agency for payment because it is a medical bill and they are not allowed.

Re: Do you think that health insurance should be free?
I actually think we get pretty much for our taxes on Long Island. We have a great school system. All of the high schools offer many APs--in some states hardly any schools do! Without such high quality public schools, more people would turn to parochial or private schools, which cost $5,000-20,000 a year just for tuition. Our beaches, parks, and town facilities are some of the best in the country. Each season we get booklets of town-funded activities run through our local library...Trips to Broadway shows, CT, etc...We might not take advantage of all of it but Long Island has so much to offer! But, I'd still rather move back to NJ and pay less taxes.
