I think it depends on how old you are and where you are in your life. For instance, DH and I are both 33 and we just bought our first home. We could afford a "regular" home so instead of buying something we would outgrow in 5 years we just went for it. I am sure if we got married younger, like in our 20's, (we were 31), we would have started out in a co-op/condo and then upgraded to a house.

I agree- we are 30 and we are skipping the starter home, we never planned on buying one- we are going right into our forever house

but- had the market been different when we got married and not at the peak- things might have worked out differently- so more then 1 factor went into our decesion

age, market conditions and the fact that we don't know where we want to live- and if we want to stay in NY- have all factored into our decesion

plus- it's cheaper to rent then make a mistake in this market- buying a house in NY- will most likey cost more then double our rent- so we don't want to rush into anything

A lot of what Beth said is why we still rent and have postponed buying a home right now.

We are willing to wait for the right home. If we did buy something now, it would be a small fixer-upper. We don't want to dump a lot of money in a home that we will outgrow in 2 years, so we're willing to wait for what we want.

we bought a starter home. We plan on moving oos in a few years or to a bigger place. For us we like to move alot I guess. We got a great deal on our house and its not that small either its 3 beds 1 bath with a full basement so we are going to add another bath down there in about a year or so. For the 3 of us its plenty of room.

I think the concept of a "starter home" on LI is somewhat gone. Considering there are houses on the market for over 400K that are in horrible condition. I don't see 400K as a price for a "starter home". We bought a move in condition house that we plan on either expanding on or possibly selling and buying bigger. However, we didn't go into it with the mindset that it's a "starter home", it's just our "first home" with possibilities. I think the idea of a starter home now has more characteristics of a co-op or condo.

Re: do you think the "starter home" idea is becoming outdated??

I bought a condo, but I have always had different thoughts on buying a house.

My parents bought a starter 35 years ago and are still in it! So for the next home I buy, I am going to want to live in it for a long time - possibly my whole life - just in case.

It makes finding the "perfect" house more difficult but I don't want to buy a house that I know for sure I won't live in for a long time.

The condo, for me was different becasue it was an exceptional investment at the time.

we have been moving up for years and it works for us. For others, I can see why they don't want to move (it's not my favorite thing Chat Icon )

My parents are still in their first house (4 BR, 3 bath) over 40 years later.

We were married young,(21 and 23) and thought renting was foolish, we couldnt see ourselves paying $1800 a month in rent, when we could own for that much, so we bought a starter home, and pay less than a lot of our friends do in rent, now a little over a year later we are selling and moving into hopefully our forever home

I think it depends on how you define "starter." We just bought a 3bed 1ba house and probably could be called a starter. It was what we could afford right now and is also a fixer. However the house does have room to expand and we could potentially live there a long time. We will see where life takes us and figure it out then.

This is us word for word. But by the time we finish this house I think I want it to be my "starter" and "finisher" LOLChat Icon I cant imagine doing all this again.

LOL, I know that feeling - we are doing so much work, right now I can't even imagine moving somewhere else, and doing it again!!!!

I totally agree. I feel like once you put the work into making a house your own, who wants to do all that work again.

I don't ever want to move again!!!

Re: do you think the "starter home" idea is becoming outdated??

We bought a small home- 1200 sq. feet or so- 3 br, 1 ba.
For us, it's a starter home- if it had a basement- I would stay there forever. But children have a way of taking up LOTS of room, and we want 2.
maybe with 1 child, it would work...
If we didn't plan on children, it would be a forever home.

I disagree. The idea that there is nothing under 400K is bogus. There are several homes on LI, maybe not in the best areas or areas you would choose to live in, that are in the low 300's, even some in high 200's. I think when I consider a starter home, it is def. something in the low-mid 300's. JMO

I should have stated in certain areas because I was speaking from my personal home buying perspective. There were areas that we wanted to live in and in those specific areas a "starter" would be in the low 400's. Needless to say, there are plenty of starter homes in other areas that do indeed start in the price range you mentioned and that make sense if you wanted a starter home. And in that case, then yes a starter home is still an understandable and smart concept.

I think so. DH and I bought our "starter home" 3 1/2 years ago with the intention of only staying 5 years. The housing market has gone up so much now, that I can't see how we are going to afford to move again. It's frustrating. Chat Icon

Re: do you think the "starter home" idea is becoming outdated??

My house is considered a starter home, 3 bedroom, 1 bath ranch. We bought the house over 10 years ago and do not plan to move anytime soon. If we needed to, we could finish the basement or build up. I don't see why I should have to take raises and pay more taxes and utilites just to have a bigger house.

We did a starter because we knew we wouldnt be here too long so we bought something we could improve and move up from.

Depends if you plan in staying in the same area for a long time. I dont think our generation lives in the same house for 30 yrs like our parents did so I say the starter is still alive.

I think in the Tri-State area the idea of a starter still exists. Starter houses are Chat Icon here. The house we are in the process of buying is a 4BR cape, not my dream house but if I love the area then we will put a large extension on it and stay forever. I think our generations "starters" maybe different from that of our parents because now I think people are more willing to put extensions on then to move.

We bought my parents house so I have lived here for 34 years! We are not planning to move until the kids are older and out of the house.
I know other people whom have bought their parents homes so they stay there for awhile.
I don't understand why staying in one home that long is not possible. I think people today want bigger and better and are never satisfied.

We bought a "starter". I dont think the idea is outdated.. thats what most YOUNG couples can afford. In our group of friends everyone bought a condo or starter. I dont know many people in their mid - late 20s buying huge homes they will live for "forever". And reply to what someone posted above... starter homes that ive seen and least ours was WAYYY over 300!

I guess it also depends on the area and what people consider starter homes.
