Doctor at time of delivery question....

There are 2 drs. in the ob practice I go to. I really like the dr i chose, it is such a HUGE thing for me. I haven't met the other dr yet, but I'm sure I will sometime. So far all my appts have been and will be with my doc.

So today i got the letter from the hospital saying they are expecting me on my due date, but that my dr will be the OTHER dr. I will talk to my dr about it at my next appt but i wanted to ask, is this just because he is on call or something?I man my dr will actually do it, right? He didn't say he was going to be away or anything, so he should be the one delivering right? I had a mini panic attack when I saw the other guys name.

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

I think it depends on your doc and the practice, but it sounds like the other doc is working that day.
For me, there are 5 docs in my practice and I had to see all of them throughout my pregnancy so that I would be familiar with whoever was at the hospital that day.
I ended up LOVING the doc that delivered my twins and feel very lucky she was the one there that day, even though it wasn't my primary.

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

There were 2 docs in my practice & w/ DD when the time came one dr. had a funeral & the other had a wedding...the "funeral" dr. came back in time for my CS (w/ the hospital dr. on duty).

With DS I had a Sked CS; so both doc's were there; but if not it would have been whatever doc was on duty that day.

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

Only one of the three doctors in my practice delivers. The day Abby was born, he was actually on his way home from vacation. The doctor on call was from a practice they cross with in these types of situations. She ended up calling him and he flew in like Superman. They both did the emergency c-section together. I knew it was a strong possibility he may not be able to deliver Abby in the first place - even if he WAS on call and available. What would I have done if he was on an emergency when I came in? Someone else would have to do it. It is simply something we have to deal with.

There are 3 doctors in the practice that I go to and I've had to meet with all of them. For me, it all depends on who is on call when I go into labor... I am Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that I go into labor when my main doctor is around, but that's something that is definitely out of my control.

I'd recommend making an appointment with the other doctor, just in case he is the one that delivers you. At least then you won't be meeting him for the first time in the delivery room.

My OB's office is 2 Dr's and all the auths and billing were done under one of them even though I normally saw the other. It's more a procedural thing. Both of them actually did my c section.

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

FWIW, my ob was away and the on call dr did my csection. YEs, I met him for the first time right before surgery when he came in to talk to me.

He was very nice and nothing but professional.

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

My office has 7 different doctors and they make sure to schedule us with all of them so that whoever is on the day I deliver I would have met them prior to when I go into labor.

I would try to schedule an appointment with the other doctor just in case!

It depends...

My OB is in a group of 2, but I visited the other partner once... just in case (my OB said he would personally deliver me).

It was lucky because she (the partner) was on call the night that I went into labor. My OB ended up delivering me the next day (don't forget... labor is long). Both were excellent.

Again... unless you are having an elective CS... you can't really plan for things. Few people go into labor on their due date.

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

My doctor is the only one in his office and so other doctors from other offices (probably who also work alone) might be there to deliver for me. At first I was nervous but then I thought I'll probably just want to get that baby out and not care who's down there doing the work!

Re: Doctor at time of delivery question....

There are a few OBs in my practice and it's standard that I should meet with them (for my regular check-ups) at least once before I give birth should they be the dr on-call that day. I really hope it's my dr, but I know I can't control that.
He did tell me that he always works on Christmas, should I happen to go into labor that dayChat Icon
