Doctor estimating me at 6 weeks -- but i dont know if its POSSIBLE
I had my blood test today to confirm the pregnancy. The nurse asked me when my LMP was -- October 17th. BUT, I have very long cyles (38 days) so I wasnt due this month until almost November 23rd or 24th. She estimated my pregnancy at 6w3d. It seems a little odd to me -- I thought I was only about 5 weeks along. I ovulated on/around Novemeber 10th according to a digital OPK. Got my BFP on November 21st.
Is it possible for the OPK to have been wrong? Or is it possible for me to have gotten pregnant BEFORE I got my surge on the 10th? Or, do you think the nurse is mis-estimating how far along I am??
Also, is there another way for the doctor to estimate your progression other than your LMP? Can they do it just from an ultrasound or sonogram?

the way the dr. calculates it STARTS with the first day of last period so this is why they always calculate ahead of what it technically should be

i'm not sure about your 'timing' - but until they can do an U/S to determine the actual due date - they have to base it on LMP...
when is your first ultrasound?? Once that happens - they can measure the baby and give you a date based on that...

I think maybe because they always add 2 weeks - maybe thats the discrepancy ???...I put in Oct 17 as LMP and this is what came up...

They will reassess your due date at your first ultrasound. Make sure, though, that you tell whoever is doing it that you know that you did not ovulate until CDx and that your cycles are generally 38 days - otherwise they will think the baby is not developing.
Unfortunately even in the world of OB GYN where they see women every single day, they still go by the pregnancy wheel for due dates It's archaic and ridiculous that they simply pay no attention to the fact that you may have a longer cycle but unfortunately it's a fact of life.
Congratulations

right, but based on my cycle lengths and when I actually conceived, she would technically be wrong, correct?

You are absolutely correct. I had a FIGHT with the nurse when I made my first prenatal appointment because I have insanely long (and irregular) cycles - 48 days the month I got pregnant. She kept telling me I had to come in immediately and I kept telling her that there was nothing for them to see yet! (My office doesn't see you until 8w and does an ultrasound.) It literally LITERALLY took 3 phone calls to finally set up an appointment for the correct time frame so I feel your pain

She is wrong. To base how far along you are on the date of your LMP, that is assuming your cycles are 28 days long. This has happened to so many people I know and it gets me so mad because the nurses and dr. cause so much unnessesary worrying. Just be careful, at your first sono the dr. may say the baby has stopped developing or isn't where he/she should be... don't worry when/if that happens because they are WRONG with their dates. It seems like common snese that they wpould ask how long your cycles are.

Okay, thats what i thought. Thank you. I'm going in for my first appointment on Thursday, but I'm pretty sure they dont do an u/s at that appointment. I'll be sure to mention when I O'd and how long my cycles are. Hopefully it wont confuse her, but I dont want her to think the baby isnt developing correctly just because they estimated my progression incorrectly.

Babycenter has a proper due date calendar (requires # days your cycle is) and based on that, you are due August 3rd and are 5 weeks pregnant Congratulations

Re: Doctor estimating me at 6 weeks -- but i dont know if its POSSIBLE
I had this issue I have irregular periods so my EDD based on my LMP would be June 3 but when they did a sono at 9 weeks they changed my EDD (to what I expected it to be) June 11th - actually I'm a scheduled csection so this baby is scheduled to come on my original EDD (coincidence - only b.c my OB schedules for wednesdays so it just worked out that way) unless he/she doesn't make an earlier appearance.
Don't worry about it - when you have your appt make sure you tell them you think you O'd late and could be off by as much as x days and when they do a sono they will use that to try to date the pregnancy.
Etd to add usually the people who schedule the appt go by your LMP - to make the appt but the nurses and the drs should listen to you when you say you have a longer cycle and use the longer cycle as the base date.

Re: Doctor estimating me at 6 weeks -- but i dont know if its POSSIBLE
As of today according to the dr. I am 5 weeks and 2 days. I should have also O'd on the 10th and LMP was 10/27....my cycles have been on the long side from time to time as well.
I think the nurse may have just been a few days off. Wait until the sono to get a better estimation.

They will give you a proper due date at your first sonogram.

Did they do a sono yet? When they go in to look at the embyo and the yolk sak - they will be able to give you a much better estimate. Definately by your 12 week appointment you will have a better idea.
I wasn't sure either because I had been nursing and only had two periods - which we not "normal". The doctor estimated and then he took a look with a internal sono and was able to give me a better estimate.
I hope this help a little bit.

Re: Doctor estimating me at 6 weeks -- but i dont know if its POSSIBLE
My doc estimated me at my first appt to be 9 weeks, based on my LMP. My periods can be irregular, and I knew that it was impossible to be 9 weeks, since DH and I hadn't had sex in that time frame. I went for an US that same week and they said I was much earlier along than they thought. I was so early along, that they couldn't even tell how far along I was. Turns out that I was 4 weeks, not 9!

Re: Doctor estimating me at 6 weeks -- but i dont know if its POSSIBLE
My cycle has never been 28 days. My due date is March 6 but if you went based on a 28 day cycle, I would be due on Feb 26. When the doctor did my first sono, he placed down Feb 26 first and then changed it after the sono. Don't worry!!

dr's always go by LMP. when you start doing ultrasounds, they can check to see how accurate/off they were. a week in the grand scheme of things isn't that off.

you're totally right. how far along you actually are depends on when you ovulated, which if you have a long cycle would be much later.
when they use the pregnancy wheel they are assuming a 28 day cycle... which in your case is many days off!

Re: Doctor estimating me at 6 weeks -- but i dont know if its POSSIBLE
I totally agree that they go by the pregnancy wheel until they can confirm by an early sonogram. I would suggest a sonogram when you think you will be 6 weeks because then they can measure and make sure.
