DOE open market
When does it open? This is my first year in the DOE and while I love my job, commuting to the Bronx is taking its toll financially with tolls and gas and wear/tear. I'd love to get into a Queens district closer to home (I'm in Nassau).
How does open market work though? Will my principal know I'm looking to transfer? How do I apply and are transfers guaranteed? I have no idea how it works. Any and all insight is appreciated.
If I end up at my current school again next year, it wouldn't be the end of the world... but I'd love to not pay tolls.

DOE open market
It usually opens sometime in early April I forget exactly when. Your principal won't know that you have applied for a job through open market. However if you go on an interview they might want to speak to someone from your school as a reference if they like you. I was on my schools hiring committee last year and I know that when my principal offered someone a job who was already DOE she gave them a day to contact their old principal before she reached out to them. And it's not like you apply for a transfer and you just go. You still have to go on interviews with other candidates and be picked for a specific job. There's no gaurantee of getting a job especially in a good queens district depending on what you are liscensed in. What exactly are you looking for? Elementary? Special ed?

Re: DOE open market
Elementary.
I misunferstood the whole "open market" thing. I was under the impression that you could put in for a transfer and then meet with the new principal and basically just switch. Damn. I didn't know it was a whole process. The way someone at work explained it to me was that it was basically paperwork and you go.
Thanks for the information

It's not a whole big process at all. You are right- you put in for a transfer, and they will contact you to interview from there. If they like you, they might call your principal like the above poster said, but it's not a big deal. Just tell them honestly that you love your job, but that due to the commute, you decided to try to get a position closer to home.
It opens sometime in April. Personally, I would just look up good elementary schools in district 25 and 26, go to their websites, look up the name of the principal, and send an email directly with your resume and cover letter. That's how I got my job in district 25 (middle school). if the principal is John Doe, the email would be [email protected]. Works 99% of the time!

I wouldn't say it's a whole process but it's also not as simple as picking a school and just getting transferred either. Think of it as applying for a new job - they look at a bunch of candidates and interview and then make a decision. Years ago there used to be seniority transfers where if you had more years than someone in another school you could actually bump them out of a position - those don't happen anymore. Also - open market can be tricky. Sometimes jobs are posted because they have to be for a certain time but the school might actually have someone who was a leave or that they knew.
