Does anyone else feel bad about the birds that get trapped in Home Depot/Lowe's etc?
I was just in Hdepo and Lowes today and I heard all these birdies chirping. I hate going there and seeing them up in the rafters. I just have a feeling they will never make it out. THey fly in through the garden areas that are exposed and sometimes dart in through the doors. And for them to make it out they would have to fly low and down towards the people, which I don't think they would do. I feel so bad for them. Am I the only one???

Actually I think they have it made. I never considered them trapped.
They're in a warm place & when the store is closed can go for the vegetation.

they have it made- it is warm and I am sure they sneak some bird food- ever grab a bag and it has a hole in it and they fly all over the place in there so they get their exercise.

I don't really feel that bad, especially since I got pooped on by one of them once!

I used to work in a garge where birds used to live in there. Trust me, they get out. They like it in there, no rain, no predators. They know what they are doing, they make nests in there too. Feel bad, only for the people that have to duck when they fly low

Well ok it is warm. Maybe they like that. But what do they eat? That is what I feel most bad about.

They eat the seed and stuff they sell. I never thought of them as trapped, I guess I assumed they were there voluntarily.
....now I do feel bad for them!

I hope they do eat that stuff b/c it is not like the store sells people food that they could nibble off the floor.
I just don't see how they can fly out. I guess i just saw it as they are trapped and it is one big deathtrap. Now I am not a bird lover so much, but I care about all helpless animals. And I feel sad seeing and hearing these birds in a store when they should be out in nature.
Sure I don't want them pooping on me, but I don't wish them harm either. But I hope some of you are right, I hope they are warm and happy and not hungry there.

They eat the seeds that are sold (birdseed, grass seed). If you look on the floors there's almost ALWAYS seeds that have broken out of a bag. They also eat bugs that are attracted by the seed and vegetation.

Re: Does anyone else feel bad about the birds that get trapped in Home Depot/Lowe's etc?
No because they are usually one of two kinds:
House Sparrow European Starling
These are two non native species that are in abundance and actually have a negative impact on native birds like the Eastern Bluebird.
They get caught inside more often because they have more of a scavenger instinct and are more daring.
I do feel bad if I were to hit one with my car or find them dead because they flew into the glass windows of my building, as I would any living thing. But I don't really feel bad for the ones 'trapped' inside the store.

Wow greenfreak. I thought for sure you would feel bad for the ones in the store. I did not know the negatives of those birds being so prevalent.

Re: Does anyone else feel bad about the birds that get trapped in Home Depot/Lowe's etc?
We have three birds in our warehouse/plant. The other night I had both doors to my office open and all the sudden something flew by my head and SMACK hit the window and dropped. I was like HOLY $HIT!!!! It was one of the birds so I closed both doors and called for people to come help me (anyone that was a bird lover) and they caught him eventually and put him outside in the woods.

If they couldn't get out and had nothing to eat, don't you think (1) there would be a more dead birds at Home Depot and (2) there would be a lot fewer live ones going in there?

I just figured that employees would pick up any birds that died. But I am always waiting to find one dead somewhere in there.
Thanks though. I feel a bit better knowing they have a chance to survive.

i hate when birds get stuck in my building we have to chase them around and catch them in a net to let them out otherwise we cannot alarm the building because they set off the motion detectors it is very annoying!

Re: Does anyone else feel bad about the birds that get trapped in Home Depot/Lowe's etc?
They totally eat the birdseed! At my Home Depot, it's right at the edge of the outdoor part ... and there's no real ROOF, so they can fly in and out at their leisure.
I feel a little bad when I see them in Costco or the supermarket because while there is stuff to eat, it probably is a more difficult for them to get out ... although I guess the huge door openings at Costco shouldn't be a problem for them to fly out.

I used to feel that way. I thought, how can a self-professed bird lover not love ALL birds, including the House Sparrow and Starling?
Then I learned more, and read more of the impact they have. Because there are millions of them and they adapt so well, I'm not terribly upset when they perish.
Here is a previous rant about them on the Home board.
Thankfully, I haven't seen any Starlings at my bird feeders at the new house. But they used to gobble down my suet and bird seed and prevent smaller birds from getting any at our old place.
