Does anyone file their taxes late?
On purpose? I know some tax preparers do because they are so busy with their business.
I know some file Oct 15.

Re: Does anyone file their taxes late?
We did last year and will this year You just file and extention form... because my DH's business wasn't ready to have its taxes done and the accountant didn't have the time to devote to getting it all done we can't get our personal ones done either.

Re: Does anyone file their taxes late?
I never have although I hear it's no big deal. You just have to file for an extension.

This year if you don't file by April 15th, you won't get the economic stimulus chheck.

Exactly my Accountant told me the other day that he has pulled 3 all nighters in the last three weeks, I feel really bad for him. He said that usually business owners want to file an extension, but this year everyone wants their $$$ form the gov.

wrong
Q. If I'm filing a tax return this year just to get a stimulus payment, by when do I have to file?
A. The IRS encourages everyone to file by the normal April 15 tax deadline: The sooner you file the sooner you can receive your stimulus payment. But if you have obtained a valid six-month extension to file or if you are filing to establish your eligibility for the stimulus payment, filing by Oct. 15 means the IRS can process your return and issue a stimulus payment before the end of the year.

not true.. you just get it later
eta (From IRS website) People who file a return after April 15 will receive their economic stimulus payment, but probably about two weeks later than the schedule shows. A return must be filed by October 15 in order to receive a stimulus payment this year.

This is true..although filing late does not mean you get to pay late. Everyone has to PAY by 4/15 even if you don't file the forms by 4/15. If you still wind up owing when you eventually do file, you'll possibly be assessed interest and penalties.

trying to assess whether it's worth it. I've heard that if you file by Oct 15 there may be less of a chance of audit.
I'm getting audited right now for 2005 and want to avoid future audits.

honestly, i've never heard of that...the IRS focuses more on the content of the tax returns. so many millions of americans file extensions.
we in the tax business say that 'tax season' doesn't end until Oct 15

I had a very high recommended CPA tell me this. He says it takes you out of the normal audit track if you file late.
Not a guarantee, but it was something I wanted to look into.
I've got nothing to hide, I just never want to do it again.

unless he was recommended to you from the IRS, he really has no footing.
not to say he's not a good acct...but NOTHING takes you out of the audit track...b/c the statute of limitations on audits give them YEARS to become interested in your return...a few months means nothing to them.
sorry luv. make sure your p'd and q's are in order, and hope they never become interested in you again.
I highly recommend my accnt too...but I don't give him so much credit to know the inner workings of the most secretive govt. agency...and I sleep with him...so inside info I should be getting

funny girl..wish I was sleeping with my cpa, then he would take care of all this crap and I wouldn't deal with it.
3 years is the statute..I'm clear for 2004 but not 2006 and 2007. There is no guarantee that you won't get audited, but he felt very strongly about it.
That's why I'm going to another cpa to hear some more opionions about my return.
I hate this.

FYI, The statute of limitations does not apply in the case of a false tax return or fraudulent tax return filed with the IRS with intent to evade any tax.
I'm not saying you filed anything fraudulent...I'm just putting it out there. I don't think taxpayers should worry so much about audits, especially in your case where you say everything is on the up and up. I know it's a giant hassle and can even give you sleepless nights, but there's nothing you can do when the taxman cometh.

Re: Does anyone file their taxes late?
yeah, everything is on the up and up but there are ways to not get your return flagged. Even if I have legitimate deductions it can be flagged. It blows and I hope you never get audited.
They take all of your records, bank accounts, brokerage accounts and ask for your first born.
There are definitely ways to be more stealth. I need good advice about this.
I'm small potatoes..why don't they go after the big fish?
also, even if you prove they are legit, they can disallow at whim..then you have to pay..or appeal..I think the government is in the hole big time and they have to go after law abiding tax payers to get more money.
