Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?UPDATE
Next week is Red Ribbon week at the high school where I am the guidance counselor. We use this week to try to encourage our students to be alcohol and drug free. As part of the program, on Monday they are going to announce that one of our homecoming queens was "killed" over the weekend in a horrific drunk driving accident. The teachers are supposed to use the shock moment to get kids talking about the consequences of drinking and driving and make them more aware since it is a popular and well-loved student. Teachers are supposed to wait for an "appropriate" moment and announce it was staged to make them aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. It is sponsered by our local police dept and our student council.
I don't know if I am too sensitive here but I have a HUGE problem with tricking students into thinking that one of their own was killed, no matter what the gain and value is. Am I over reacting here? Or does this seem unethical to anyone else. Please debate.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
Wait, they're telling the students that one of their own was killed...yet no one died?
I'd be furious...and I think that kind of trickery is going to backfire.
The issue has many points to stand on its own as to why you shouldn't drink & drive - LYING, shouldn't be one of those points.

I teach middle school so we have out own red ribbon stuff.
That just seems wrong and possibly offensive. I see what they are trying to do, but there might be a better way to get the point across. tricking the students is not the way to build trust!

Not only is it WRONG, it is wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong not to mention wrong Talk about instilling NO trust in their educators on the matter or on the subject
ETA: If my they had done something like that at my DD's HS I would have them in a new school the next day. I'm NOT kidding!

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
I have an issue on playing with the students emotions like that. It's too dangerous at that age. Plus, how are students supposed to trust those that cry wolf?
I would instead like to see students volunteer "to die". Where they cannot speak to anyone during the day, they dress as a corpse, and the teachers make a point to discuss it.
I hope it all works out.

That is WRONG. Yes, it would be a wake up call for some, but doing it in that manner is definitely not appropriate. You are going to have very angry students as well as parents.

OMG...the adminstration thinks this is a good idea????? they actually naming a student???? i think it is terrible... the kids are going to be very upset... not to mention, it's cruel and unnecessary. i think there are other ways to get the point across....
how about articles about teens in other towns and communities? teachesr can share those and have kids talk.... or i know SADD brings the actual cars that were crashed from drunk driving....

That's disgusting to make people think this girl is dead when she's not. It's a horrible (actually words can't describe it) feeling to hear that someone you love, or even just know casually, is dead. You don't play around with that emotion

Instead they should have a presentation about Jacqueline Saburido, who was horribly disfigured when her car was hit by a drunk driver. (and two of her friends died)

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
I think that it is a horrible idea. How can they think about doing that to their students. It is very wrong to play with a persons emotions like that, especially high school aged students who are emotionally vulnerable to begin with. Think about how that girls closest friends are going to react. Someone could literally have a nervous breakdown.
Not to mention how do they expect teachers to teach students about the dangers of drinking and driving when they just found out a friend has passed away. They are not going to be able to teach anything... They are going to be consoling a classroom full of very upset students.
I cannot imagine the phone calls from angry parents that you will get the next day. If I had a child in that school I would be furious.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
Is the student who is allegedly dead going to know before hand? I don't think I could handle be 16 and an announcement saying I died.
I find this method quite odd. Most schools just go to the junkyard and get a wrecked car. They place it on the front lawn or somewhere else with heavy traffic. They have a sign that says "Don't drink and drive". That gets the message accross quite well. The method your school is going to use it very questionable.
ets: Your guidance off is going to be packed Monday with students flipping out. That is not half as bad as Tuesday morning when all the parents come down to kick azz.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
Wow, I think that's really messed up.
As an adult, I'd be livid if I was told that someone I knew died, and I went through all the shock and sadness and the gamut of raw emotions that occur when you hear news like that, and then they announced that they just made it up in the spirit of creating a teachable moment.
I don't think it's fair at ALL to do that to students. There are certain topics that shouldn't be taken lightly, and death is one of them.

agreed. There are so many legit examples out there. This girls case really strikes you. That is disgusting to lie about one of their classmates, you should speak up about it. If I was a student, I would walk out after that. I certainly wouldn't be able to concentrate- I would be busy with rage.
eta- this sounds like something Michale Scott would do.

I think its awful...I work in a middle school and to play with kids emotions like that is bad.
I think they are going to have a huge backlash from the parents if they go through with this.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
That is horrible! As a teacher and someone who lost a loved one to drunk driving I can't imagine putting anyone through that pain and then saying "Just Kidding". Not only that but I think that parents would have a major problem with this when their child comes home and tells them what the school did. There are so many other ways to promote awareness and this is NOT one of them.

Re: Does anyone find this wrong or is it just me?
From one guidance counselor to another I think that is unethical, inappropriate, educationally unsound and beyond cruel!! Who in the world agreed to such a moronic stunt??? And as the guidance counselor, you know you're going to get all the calls from the irate parents!
ETA - My old school in NY last year was the one where we had two seniors die in a car crash at the end of May - the kids found out at school the next day. I pray I never have to experience the pain, grief and horror of that with all the kids again in my life - and your administrators are doing this as a lesson?????????
