Does anyone forage for mushrooms?
It seems to be a popular thing to do here, or maybe I just hear more about it.
The idea scares me! Just wondering if anyone here does that as a hobby?

Re: Does anyone forage for mushrooms?
I do not but one of my former co-workers did. He would go on hikes all the time for mushrooms. He would also eat them along the way. I thought he was nuts. LOL Like don't you want to reference some materials first before you just shove a mushroom in your mouth?

Yes, exactly! I’m in a cooking group and people have posted some beautiful Morel mushrooms. They are $$$$, so finding them is great. But there is something called a “false Morel.” Thanks, but no thanks!

No, but I know people who do as a hobby. I forage at Stop and Shop.

Re: Does anyone forage for mushrooms?
Does digging through the selection at the supermarket until I find some that don't look slimy count?
I know someone who grew up in Russia and used to do it as a kid.

LOL about the slimy aspect. I just made a dinner with mushrooms and a pretzel dumpling. I usually go to mushroom dealers, but they are pricey, so I look for them in supermarkets.
And yeah, it tends to be people who have lived in Eastern Europe, which many parts are considered Central Europe. I get mostly Poles who say they forage. I’m a Pole/Italian mix and this blows my mind anytime I talk to a Pole.

My dad and uncles do. They are all immigrants from Italy. It's like a hobby for them. They call each other when they spot them, they have a certain time of year when they go "mushroom hunting" as we jokingly refer to it my family. Somehow they know which are good to eat...they either cook them or can them depending on the mushroom. I've eaten them before.

Where do they do this? Locally or do they travel around?

Maybe I'm just punchy or something but the concept of a mushroom dealer is amusing to me.

Re: Does anyone forage for mushrooms?
My homeschool group created a few foraging events to get wild mushrooms and other things like edible wild plants, berries, etc. with Steve Brill (he’s very knowledgeable with this and pretty well known). We weren’t able to go cause we had other activities going on but the events looked very interesting.

You’re right. It should be mushroom stand at the market. I had a great one when I lived in Frankfurt.

Long Island, Upstate NY, NJ, Pennsylvania. We live in queens and one uncle lives in PA- they have this whole network of old italian men that also look for mushrooms and they give each other a head's up or share their pickings. LOL. It's pretty funny actually.
My uncle recently picked a bactch- I think in PA, and they smelled awful when he boiled them and they had like a meeting of the minds to figure out if they should try them or if that meant they were poisonous...they have books/consult the internet. They decided to trash that batch LOL
