Does anyone have a child (or know one) with type 1 diabetes?
My friends 2 year old has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Does anyone know anyone with a small child who has this?
My heart is breaking for them, although I know she will be fine.

Our next door neighbor has a little girl with Type 1 diabetes. I don't know the situation, but I always donate when her parents walk for a cure.
It can't be easy.

I was diagnosed at 13, but at least by then I was old enough to take care of things myself, and understand at least the majority of what was going on. I can't imagine what the parents, or the child is going through...

Once they get used to the treatment, things will become a whole lot easier. My DH has type I but he was older when diagnosed. I somehow manage to strike up conversations with people who have had to cope with having young babies diagnosed. I have met a lot of people who have bene in the situation. It is rough at first. My DH believes that newly diagnosed people and kids should start with an insulin pump, not shots. Not everyone feels that way but I figured I would mention it.

Re: Does anyone have a child (or know one) with type 1 diabetes?
I was diagnosed at age 10. At the hospital they taught me how to take care of myself (shots, blood testing). It will be hard with a 2 year old b/c they still can't communicate that well which can be an issue if they have low or high blood sugar. However, technology has improved and I have an insulin pump and blood glucose sensor that reads my blood sugar every 6 minutes. They should really research into getting her a pump and continuous glucose monitor. It is a must for a child that young. I wish them luck, but they should know that she/he will grow up to lead a normal and happy life...I did!

My friend's son was diagnosed last year (he's 9). I know he was hospitalized and that's when they discovered it. His mother has it also. He has to test his levels at various times during the school day. to your friend and their little one.
