Does anyone have any suggestions for starting teeth brushing?
DD is 18 months and I have always cleaned her gums/teeth. I am trying to introduce toothpaste and actual brushing but she won't have anything to do with it. I let her play with a toothbrush and I show her mommy doing it but she won't let me brush her teeth. Any hints?

If she has a favorite character you can use a puppet and let the puppet brush her teeth.

Re: Does anyone have any suggestions for starting teeth brushing?
I got my DD a Dora toothbrush and told her she can do it all by herself if she lets mommy "finish" when she is done. Worked like a charm. She does it herself and then she gives me the toothbrush, she has no idea that I am really the one doing the bulk of the brushing. I would also suggest you buy the Orajel Toddler toothpaste...when toddlers begin brushing they may swallow some toothpaste and the Orajel is safer. Good luck!

Re: Does anyone have any suggestions for starting teeth brushing?
When I'd asked the suggestion that worked (at least for a while) was to pretend I was looking for Dora or Elmo or whoever in their mouth.
Someone who is a dentist or works for a dentist suggested getting a cute egg timer and turning it into a game (can we get it done before the bell?)
Sarah still fights getting her teeth brushed. Andy is the opposite - he loves it and always has.

I am no help...DD doesn't mind doing it if I let her hold the toothbrush and do it herself...but I can't get the front of her teeth brushed because she clenches her mouth shut

Re: Does anyone have any suggestions for starting teeth brushing?
My DD loves brushing her teeth and will let me brush them briefly. She has 2 toothbrushes and she'd walk around chewing them all day, if I let her. When I brush her teeth, she holds one toothbrush and we take turns brushing her teeth. She'll only let me brush for a few seconds but I get in there like 5x to it's okay.
Maybe leave the toothbrush(es) out and let her play with them for a while.

I am no help either since Michael loves brushing his teeth. If I would let him, he would make me brush them all day long. I sit him next to the sink in the bathroom, put tooth paste on his tooth brush and he makes me brush them. Sometimes he closes his mouth and then we play around and he opens them again.

Re: Does anyone have any suggestions for starting teeth brushing?
my daughter loves JoJo the clown and they had an episode on brushing teeth and she saw it and started mimicking the motion so i bought her a toothbrush and started signing "brush your teeth, brush your teeth (name of child) brush your teeth" so everytime we get ready to brush her teeth i sing the song and make the motions and off to the bathroom we go and she loves it.

Re: Does anyone have any suggestions for starting teeth brushing?
I dont' use toothpaste, it's too much of a distraction for DD. She'll just s uck the toothpaste off and not open her mouth.
i let her play with the toothbrush, and i help her, then let her do it, then i help her until she's done. I always let her watch me brush my teeth, then we do hers. She gets excited.
My dentist told me a good wipe down in a circular motion at the toddler stage is all they really need, the toothbrushing is just for them to get used to it in their mouth.
