Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

yes - its a PITA. it takes me an hour to eat a bagel...

CVS/Walgreens sells a mouth guard in the toothbrush aisle. its like $25, but its a lifesaver! you have to boil it and get it to mold to your mouth, and wear it at nite when you sleep - it will prevent you from grinding/clinching your jaw and you will be in less pain.

Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

Yes but not as severe.
I had an accident some yrs ago which caused the TMJ. All I know is that I had bad headaches and couldnt chew gum and talk to much cause my jaw would hurt and then cause a headache.

I was never given a mouth piece but I do hear that it helps esp with the grinding.

I have it pretty bad. I dont grind though - i just clench at night. I have a guard but i just cant wear it..... sometimes it's painful but the corrective procedure is supposed to be extremely painful and not worth it unless you are in a lot of pain. If you have gone undiagnosed until now, and your dentist is just recommending the mouthpiece, you probably dont need the surgery.

Definitely dont chew gum if you have TMJ! It will make it worse....

Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

I clench and grind- and I have ear pain- which is a common side effect- so I went to an ENT thinking I had an ear problem- and now I have to go to the dentist to speak to him

I think I do, I have to go to the dentist. My ears have been ringing for months and I went to an acupuncturist for it who thinks I have TMJ. My jaw cracks often and sometimes I have pain. I have been procrastinating on the dentist appt. though.. I really need to get on that.

ringing is another sign- I have that one also- I thought it was hearing damage

I bascially have every sign expect my jaw locking!

Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

I have it BAD! I actually just had a headache wake me up out of my sleep & I was in tears~ then the headache lasted 2 weeks. I went to the ER b/c the head pain was so bad & my ears hurt. They gave my a brain scan bc/ of the bad headaches. But it turns out to be my TMJ - it is awful. I cannot chew hard stuff AND my smile is different- I swear my jaw shifted! I have to go to the doctor again.

Also - if you get a regular mouthpiee- like the ones for sports (they have different sizes) it is the same thing and less $$. They run about 2-5 $ instead of $25 from the drugstore.

I think I also have it. My DH wakes me up in the middle of the night bc the grinding he says is so loud. I can feel myself clenching my teeth to get comfortable too.

You're lucky because the jaw locking is scary. Sometimes i feel like i am going to have a panic attack when it locks because you feel like it will never unlock.

All the other symptoms you described can be helped with the mouth guard. My dentist has a great new type of mouth piece that only goes on your front teeth. If you want his name let me know. He is in the city though. Many insurance companies cover the cost of the guard. If not, it's about $300.

ETA: regular guards will definitely help, but they stop only the effects of the grinding. You can still clench with regular guards. you should speak to your dentist, but he will probably recommend something better if your case is severe.

Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

I have it and it's managable now but had a severe bout a few years ago. Doctors tried everything but the only thing that worked for me was going to the chiropractor. After 3 weeks I was back to normal. If yours is really bad I suggest trying one, it was truly amazing how much better I felt.

Should you get a mouthpiece, I agree with others, just get one from a sports store, don't spend the $$ having it made.

Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

She would "massage" (I don't know the correct word) my jaw. It sounds gross but it was so beneficial- she would put on a glove, do something to my jaw on inside of mouth and out the outside.

Beth, I would look into acupuncture too... it hasn't helped the ringing, but my jaw has been cracking less and has been much more comfortable.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. I had severe TMJ following an accident and the only thing that helped was accupuncture. I still grind my teeth pretty bad (or so my DH tells me) and my dentist advised I get the boil-and-bite guard. It's definitely stress related for me and gets much worse when I'm under pressure at work.

Re: Does anyone have TMJ?

Yes, I was diagonsed with it when I woke up one morning and couldn't open my mouth. It remained that way until I made my way to the dentist later that day. I was fitted for a mouthguard and went for physical therapy for months. The PT was really what helped - I would get electric treatment with warm, moist pads and then the most incredible 20 minute head, face & neck massages!!

I haven't worn the guard in a couple of years but I do still get aggrivated...stay away from chewy foods - they will only aggrivate you (gum, bagels, etc). Try warm, moist packs on your jaw/face - that helps.

eta: I'm a clencher - I find myself clenching my jaw throughout the day, not just when I sleep. Being aware of it has helped - so I just stop. I've been told I grind too, but I think DH is fibbing Chat Icon Chat Icon
