Does anyone know Average cost of a funeral?
We were told $9,000!!
The church service will be in Greenwich Villiage. Burial on Metropolitan Ave in Rego Park. Price doesn't include flowers or a wake. Could $9k be correct?

Sounds right. The cost would go up if you picked a higher end casket.

That's about what we paid for my grandmother (and she already had her plot at the cemetery).

Re: Does anyone know Average cost of a funeral?
I paid $12k for my grandmother's funeral, which was just the 2 day wake, prep fees, casket, engraving on plot, church, burial, etc. Luckily we didn't have to buy her plot because she already had one. It's sickening how much funerals cost.

Yeah. "They" recommend having at least $10k in insurance to cover the funeral.

Re: Does anyone know Average cost of a funeral?
Sounds about right. I paid 12K for my mom 6 years ago, had to buy the plot as well.
I think MIL was about 7k, but she had pre-paid her funeral and bout the plot. Her's cost less because there was no embalming and no wake, just services at the funeral home the same day of the burial. Plot was also pre-paid.

Re: Does anyone know Average cost of a funeral?
I know people find it "sickening" that a funeral costs so much but the people who are embalming/preparing your loved one have to have specific training regarding how your loved one is handled. DH is in school for this right now, and has worked in the industry for a few years now. There's many laws and procedures that need to be followed. They are governed by state AND federal laws (they are one of the few industries heavily regulated by the FTC)
Embalmers, Funeral Directors don't work for free. DH is working today, one of MANY people who are working a service. You have your funeral director who assists in assuring that you get what is needed. You have the folks at the door that help greet and direct your loved ones to the right room, make sure that you have tissues, etc. Someone has to go pick up the body at the morgue or your home, someone has do the makeup and hair, dress the body, embalm etc if there is a viewing. Someone needs to drive the hearse to the church and cemetery, and usually immediate family wants to follow in a limo, which again, doesn't drive itself.
There's overhead, too. The electric company isn't cutting the funeral home a break because of the service they provide. Neither is the town on property taxes, the bank on the mortgage, their insurers for the home, cars, business..... Hearses and Limos aren't cheap, they require maintenance and gas and drivers. And you ask that all of this be arranged for you at a moment's notice (most of us don't plan our death date.............) and have them at your disposal for 2+ days.
Amazing that no one bats an eye at dropping 25K on a wedding or at spending thousands on baptism parties, sweet 16s, bar/bat mitzvahs ... and those don't normally expose the people you're paying to arrange and service you to all sorts of things like bloodborne pathogens (HIV, Hepatitis etc) and toxic carcinogens (formaldehyde and other icky chemicals used for embalming).

We paid 12K for my grandma who passed in March. This was for a two day wake, church, casket and prayer cards. She already had a plot so that was paid for already. Flowers were separate.

Frankly, I find it quite judgmental (and offensive) to call the cost of burying a loved one "sickening". I find a slap in the face to those who are doing the job of providing you and yours with the means to say goodbye to a loved one. It was meant to put things into perspective. Everyone seems to have this delusion that they're getting cheated somehow.
I asked DH his opinion was on why people are always "shocked" at the price and he said "Nobody knows what they're getting into because everyone ignores death." And he's right, as a society we do.

That is a very good price for a funeral. It's a pretty good price for it too if it included the plot and digging the plot up. I am surprised that it does not include at least one viewing. Also, in NYS, you have up to a year to paly for the funeral. Unfortunately, I know this too well having just buried my dad.

The OP didn't call it sickening- that comment was made by a different user later on. The OP said she was 'shocked' by it. Now isn't the time for informative posts- especially on such a sensitive thread.
To the OP- sorry for your loss And yes, that sounds about right. My mom's was 13k (we had to purchase a plot).

I understand that you may be more sensitive to this because your DH going to school for this profession but I have to disagree that it is offensive that someone says the cost is sickening. It is, for lack of a better term, "sticker shock" . It's A LOT of money to spend at one time, especially if there is no insurance to help.

ITA
The OP was clearly surprised by the amount.
It's unfair to say "oh no ones cares about a cost of a wedding or baptism" and what not -- why do people have to be lumped into the same category as that? There are tons of people who go thru their entire life and never spend crazy money on an expensive wedding or christening or anything like that.
Then these people, in the worst possible time of their life, have to walk into a funeral home and bury their loved one. They are faced with the idea of life going on after this person has passed....how will they afford things? How are they going to handle life after death?
Being told that it will cost $9 to 15K to bury the loved one, is something that will sticker shock MANY people.
While you are correct that there are lots of things like overhead, let's be real here, funeral homes do not do this for the joy of it. They DO make money on these events, and the question of how much markup is happening and why it gets to expensive, is why people become so sticker shocked.

My brother is a mechanic--people find it "sickening" how much it costs to fix their cars sometimes...but my bro doesn't take it as a personal jab against him. Why should he? Your posts are unnecessary. I hope your DH is more compassionate than you are to people dealing with a difficult time.
To the OP, I'm very sorry for your loss

I think that possibly the poster who called it "sickening" might mean it in the regard that at a time in someone's life where they have just lost a loved one and there is no insurance to cover a funeral it could be seen as sickening.
I know that if (god forbid) my MIL died today it WOULD make me and DH SICK at the amount of money that we don't have to pay for a funeral for her. That is how I read the post anyway...

I didn't say I was being cheated. How often in a lifetime does a person pay for a funeral?? Hopefully, not many times so I am asking if my price quote sounds realistic. Didn't need your extra judgmental input since I never complained of being cheated or having to pay for a close relative's funeral.
