I rented a 24 ft uhaul once and did not need a special license.
The problem is bridges. You can't just get under them with a bigger truck.

I think I remember someone saying the uhaul was stick. I can drive stick though so I never really paid attention.
When we moved we rented the biggest truck from Budget it was not stick did not need a cdl and cheaper then uhaul.

I didn't think you could go on any of the parkways with a truck- regardless of the size

You can't take any of the U-Hauls on the parkways, regardless of size.
We've rented UHauls a few times (never the huge ones, though). None of them were sticks. They were all automatic.

I rented a huge automatic U-haul (the were out of the size that I really wanted), and there was no need for a CDL.

Frequently asked rental questions Rental Conditions How old do I have to be to rent equipment from U-Haul?
You only need to be 18 years old with a valid driver's license to rent our equipment. You do not need a commercial driver's license.

I was not talking about parkways.
I moved from East Northport to Melville and can tell you that you can't use those trucks on local roads either. We had to turn around because there was a bridge too low for the truck in the E. Northport/Elwood area.
It was an automatic.
