Does anyone know what I do if I want a tree down that is
on the edge of my property. Do I have to hire someone, or will the town do it?
eta: I live in Brookhaven.

Re: Does anyone know what I do if I want a tree down that is
I was going to post this today!!
I also want to take a tree down that is right in front of the curb (in brookhaven, no sidewalks). our neighbors said the town owns those trees, and we need a permit for it.
is it interfering with power lines? You can get LIPA to trim the branches (we have underground power lines, so this isnt an option for us)

The town owns a certain amount of feet of your property from the edge of your driveway to the curb called an easement. Even though they own it, you are expected to maintain it. I would call the town and tell them what you want to do. If the town planted the trees, they own them. Usually, because it is on town property, they will come and take down the tree and grind out the stump. All towns are different that's why you need to contact the proper people.

Call the Town and ask - they all have different policies. If it is in the Town Right of way (the easement Maathy referred to), it is the Town's tree, no matter who planted it, because it is on Town property.
Some towns will only remove a tree if it is dead or dying or there is a compelling reason to take it, like it is growing into your water or sewer line. They might let you take it down if you are willing to pay for it, but you have to contact them to find out the policy in your area.

Agreed! I asked DH about this as we were biking since he works for one of the Town agencies in the area and he said it's considered Town Land and those trees can't be removed, nor could we ever plant a tree in this area if it wasn't already there.
Best to call your local town govt and get an answer from them.

Betsy, can you ask your DH how hard it is to let Brookhaven take down a tree. we have a HUGE one that shadows the hole front yard. we would pay for it ourselves, but does brookhaven give you a hard time?? Or can we prune it without permission?

LOL at 9 am this morning!! I must say everyone I have talked to has been quite helpful and nice, its just the process that is stupid. She said that she would put in a work order for the right tree and that it needs to be removed before the holiday.

We'll see now if they get it down before the holidays - less than a week and a half away!
