Does anyone know what to do if your Initial Certification expires?
I renewed it for 2 years almost 2 years ago, but I still haven't been working since my dd was born so I don't have enough teaching experience to quality for permanent certification. I think I have everything else (masters, mentoring experience, etc. and about 2.5 years classroom experience but I need 3). The NYS website says they can grant at most one more year extension but only under certain circumstances, and they state that normal routine child care doesn't count. Meaning that since I'm staying home with dd while she's young I can't extend my certification again. So, when it expires, what can I do when I want to try to find a teaching job again? Do I have to apply for certification all over again? If so, does that mean I just have to take the exams again, or would I have to take more classes and student teach again?

You have to apply for a re-issue of your initial

I don't know the answer exactly but possibly the best piece of advice I ever got on here was to always deal with your local BOCES for certification issues.
If you do a search someone posted the link with phone numbers for me when I had questions about mine. The Garden City office was just wonderful. Someone is always there to help you unlike calling Albany where I would wait on hold forever and be told to call back another time, or have some other problem getting information.
Can you sub somewhere? Subbing definitely counts; without my sub experience I would have had to apply for an extension.

Thanks, I will get in touch with BOCES. This nys teach website is so confusing and unclear.
I can't sub currently bc I have my 1 year old at home and no one available to watch her, and I can't afford to put her in daycare if I'm only making sub pay.
But I will definitely contact BOCES to try to find out what I can do because I do really want to go back to teaching someday.

I didn't know subbing counts toward your certification. That's good news. I only sub periodically. Do you know how many hours you need.

540 days of substitute teaching experience may satisfy the experience requirement in lieu of three full years.
