Does anyone live in Holbrook?
Just looking for some info on the area
We're not that familiar with it but we drove out there today and found a neighborhood that we really like. Besides the neighborhood itself we are so far liking the lot sizes & taxes.
So where we were today is not right near the airport but one thing I'm wondering is how loud the planes are in different neighborhoods (if you wouldn't mind telling me how close you are to the airport that would be helpful...FM is fine if you prefer)
How is traffic in the area (during rush hour, for example)? I like the proximity to so many major roads but am also concerned about potential traffic
I've read some good things on this board about Sachem SD...any good or bad experiences to add?
And, finally...how is the shopping in the area? Are the necessities convenient?
Anything else you can think of that would be useful to know and maybe not obvious to someone just doing the usual research on the schools, etc...?
tia!!
ETA one more question: I just noticed a listing that says it has sewers. Is that true for most of the area or only certain parts?

Re: Does anyone live in Holbrook?
i lived in holbrook when I was little - we were north of the LIE.
a few areas have sewers (mainly in that neighborhood south of the lie closest to sunrise and vets-
DH and I looked in Holbrook...there are some areas i liked more than others, but overall its a nice place to live. I dont think there were any really "bad" areas at all. Sachem is a good sd - and holbrook is close to the LIE depending on where you are.
we kept finding houses we liked in our price range near the airport - that was our drawback, the noise to us was too loud. this has been brought up before here, and many of the people who live there say you dont even notice it after a while!
good luck!!

I live in Holbrook, south of the LIE by Main street
we have lived here for over 5 years and love the neighborhood. we commute intoe NYC everyday so we really do not know about the traffice on th LIE.
When we moved in, the town was working on so many improvements. They put in a few shoppng centers and we really have almost everything you would need here on Main street.
FM me about the are you were looking in and maybe I can answer any questions.

Good to know about the airport noise. Maybe I will try to do another search and find some of those posts you mentioned. The area that we fell in love with has a lot of homes in our price range and is further from the airport, so I'm thinking we should be ok.

Re: Does anyone live in Holbrook?
We're in Sayville, not far from the southern end of Holbrook. Sunrise Highway can get backed up in the morning headed West if there is anything causing problems in the Oakdale merge. I commute East so I can't give you details on wait time but I do see the traffic. Vet's Memorial has a lot of lights that slows things down and it will get backed up if traffic is diverted from either the LIE or Sunrise since it's a major link between the two. I would suggest you watch Channel 61 on Cablevision if that's an option for you, to check the traffic reports in the area at various times.
Sachem is a very large school district with a lot of students in the schools.
I have a co-worker that lives near the train station and the flight noise is bad there, as well as on the south end of the airport (Bohemia near Vets and Ocean) where the planes are often taking off. It really just depends on where you are along the flight path in addition to proximity to the airport.
As for conveniences I can say that down near Sunrise there are plenty of options for supermarkets, drugstores, etc. There are several shopping centers with stores such as Best Buy, Home Depot, Sports Authority, Borders Books, Babies R Us, Toys R Us, AC Moore, etc. - just depends on what you're looking for as to whether or not you think the conveniences are there.

You have FM
I meant to add that traffic on the LIE is ok..we're more concerned about getting to the LIE and Sunrise. We've ruled out large sections of the North Shore because of this!

I would be commuting East and my husband works in Rokonkoma so that's good news.
The airport thing is bothering me. My DH is worried that the airport will only get bigger/busier over time. I'll have to do some more research on this. Maybe my DH can drive out there during some lunch hours and check out the noise in the areas we liked. That's also good to know about Bohemia, which is another area we liked.
Shopping in the area sounds great!

Re: Does anyone live in Holbrook?
I have lived in Holbrook almost my whole life (4 months in another town) and find it a great place to live. I live near Lisa and can and do walk to stores in town. I agree there is no "bad" areas. Of course you always find that "bad" house but I would not say there are one after another like in some towns. Good luck and you can fm me too if you need more help.

Re: Does anyone live in Holbrook?
I live in Ronkonkoma right near the airport. Maybe 5 minutes away and honestly it's not bad. It's not like JFK or LaGuardia so there is not as much traffic. The planes have to change routes so that it doesn't upset all the residents.
If you are really close to the airport then it may get a little loud though.

Re: Does anyone live in Holbrook?
I grew up in Holbrook south of the LIE and about a 5 minute drive to the airport. To be honest...the planes were never a bother. You get used to it, and I don't know if it's still the same, but planes didn't land or take off after 11pm at night. I am looking at moving back to the area (in Ronkonkoma) and didn't even consider the airport a deterrant. Good luck!

Re: Does anyone live in Holbrook?
DH's parents live near the Ronkonkoma train station and the airport.
Honestly, unless it was the summer with the windows open, I never noticed the planes overhead. It definitely wasn't constant either. Maybe once every other hour I would notice it.
