Does anyone live on waterfront property?

I'm on a high bluff overlooking the Long island sound and I need advice on what to plant there. It gets very windy and nothing seems to grow well. I'd love to share ideas with someone in the same situation.
Thanks.

You should be able to plant any type of hedge or bush that like the full sun. Day lilies will also do well. Grasses also work well. Good luck.

Hostas...they grow anywhere and are very hearty.

The wind shredded the hosta leaves last summer. Something happened to the tall grasses and they didn't fill out so I have a few tall stalks but no fullness.

You shouldn't be having problems like this..I grew up on the bluffs and this was never a problem. Maybe install a small wind break so the plants can get established.

Thanks.

I am also on a bluff. You want to plant things that love sandy soil...typical plants that do well in this area are roses (knock-out rose; not the tea roses...also rosarogosa)...we have sage, lavendar, day lillies...hosta...here are some pics

and Montauk Daisies LOVE the sandy soil.

If you need plants for the bluff to help secure it, black pine do great.

Here are pics of my yard (when we moved here, there were NO PLANTS at all...my father did all this for us...if you need anything, FM me...my family owns garden centers).

Re: Does anyone live on waterfront property?

Montauk Daisies do well; so do hydrangeas..but they need a lot of water with the sandy soil, and I recommend the variety called burning embers (they are pink, and they stay relatively low so they don't block the view).

We also have a weeping cherry that has been thriving.

Sand cherry trees, butterfly bushes...there's a lot you can do.

Kathy, thank you so very much. Your plantings are beautiful. Please tell me where your garden centers are located. I need a place that offers good advice. You may FM me if you would rather. A picture is worth a thousand words! I can't wait to show them to my husband.
I notice your hostas are in a protected area. Unless someone has been there when the wind kicks up, it's hard to explain how fierce it gets. I've had the top of the windmill broken off and the flag and hosta leaves cut up as if a knfe went through them.
Thanks again.

The hostas are not really that protected...the wind hits them there as well..and yes, it can get crazy with the winds...you feel like you are in a hurricane. Are you hostas right along the bluff line? Maybe if you put them off to the side they would do better.

The hostas come up new every year anyway, so maybe this year they'd be better.

Re: Does anyone live on waterfront property?

We haven't been out there all winter so it needs a lot of work. You may see that the part of the bluff facing west curves around and doesn't have trees to protect it. We planted Montauk daisies and grasses last year but I have to add plants that will be hearty and full like yours, not just something that will barely survive from year to year. I would love flowers and more color. Hopefully, this will be the year I can accomplish this.
Your pictures are very inspirational. How high up are you? We have 176 steps going down to the beach. We guess that we are about 100 feet up on the bluff.
Thanks again Kathy.
