Does anyone salt their steaks? (lots of salt!)
My guy friend posted a video of him putting about 1/4 of an inch of salt on a raw steak. A few of us started busting on him but then someone posted a recipe that called for it. Apparently, you should salt it and leave it at room temp for an hour-I guess it's similar to what you do with eggplant. Does anyone else do this?

Yes, DH makes steak this way. Leaves it at room temp, before cooking. After it's cooked, let it rest for 10 mins, then cut. it allows the juices to redistribute.

I've heard that you should bring the steaks to room temp before you cook them. I have not heard of the salt. Did he cook it with the salt on or did he brush it off first?

Yes. It's what they do in Brazil, or at least what a Brazilian friend told me at a BBQ he had. The meat was so tender.
Eta: use rock salt not iodized salt.

Re: Does anyone salt their steaks? (lots of salt!)
Yes.
I leave my steak at room temperature for a little bit, then I generously salt and pepper both sides, heat butter up in an iron skillet, wait until it gets "foamy" and I put the steak in, flip a few times so that it has a nice crust and if its a thick steak I'll throw it in the oven a few minutes to cook a bit, but generally I like my steaks medium...so I can generally accomplish that on the stove top.
I wouldn't say I put 1/4 inch of salt....but I am most certainly generous with it. My brother is a chef, this is how he taught me to make steak. It is...delicious. Especially if you splurge for a good piece of dry aged meat. Yum!

It's a method of 'quick' dry aging. It draws out the moisture. I have done it. But I let it age for a couple of days rather than a few hours.

you are supposed to sprinkle steaks with kosher salt and let sit for an hour or so...it helps tenderize the meat.

Yup, I've done this before. I don't do it often, because I usually plan dinner at the last minute, but if I do remember, then I'll do it. Makes it nice and tender and gives it a great flavor.

Ok, next question. Does the salt get knocked off while cooking or do you wipe it off before cooking?
