Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
I think I have it and am going to the doctor this week (hopefully) . . .
Does it get diagnosed by symptoms or do they send you to a gastro doctor?

I went to a gastroenterologist and he diagnosed it based on symptoms but then did a gastroscopy before putting me on nexium. They put you out for the gastroscopy so it's not bad at all.

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
I didn't have the gastro-whatever-scopy ... I was having really bad heartburn, then trouble swallowing (no acid taste) and I was put on protonix. That stopped the heartburn but I still trouble swallowing, always felt like something was stuck deep in my throat and felt phelgmy and like I couldn't clear it.
I ended up going to an ENT (because now my ears were hurting too) and he diagnosed me with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease - LPRD.
Difference between GERD & LPRD:
What is the difference between GERD and LPRD?
Some people have an abnormal amount of reflux of stomach acid up through the lower sphincters and into the esophagus. This is referred to as GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. If the reflux makes it all the way up through the upper sphincter and into the back of the throat, it is called LPRD, or Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease. The structures in the throat (pharynx, larynx and lungs) are much more sensitive to stomach acid and digestive enzymes, so smaller amounts of the reflux into this area can result in more damage.
Anyway - GOOD LUCK!!! I suffered with symptoms for months before I finally went to the regular doctor and a few weeks before hitting the ENT and finally feeling better (he upped my protonix to 2x/day).
ETA: The ENT put a scope in my nose down to my larynx

DH get horrible heartburn and takes Pepcid complete. He's never actually been to a gastro doc, so I'm not certain if he has full on reflux.

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
I have absolutely the worst reflux. I had an endoscopy and the Dr. said he never saw an esophagus as bad as mine. I take Zegerid for it, once a day as soon as I wake up and I can't eat or drink for an hour. It works great, but if I forget the pill I am miserable all day.

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
BTW, your regular doctor will probably prescribe something for you based on your symptoms. If that doesn't work, you will most likely be referred to a gastroenterologist.

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
I had an upper GI done and it was diagnosed. They put me on a muscle relaxer for it and it improved. Now I try to be careful about what I eat so that I can control it without meds..

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
i get it on and off. did the gastro route had the endoscopy and was put on protonix.. it did help me a lot. but I don't need to be on it anymore- i've been able to control the GERD with exercise and food- if I eat white foods (bagels, white bread, etc) that tends to really give it to me the worst.

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
I sought out the cause of my reflux with the help of my doctor and fixed that instead. I didn't like the thought of taking drugs to allow me to be irresponsible about my health and diet habits.
Haven't had a problem in a long time.

I was on Protonix as well. It worked so well. I never felt better. I did have to have a gastroscopy, but it wasn't bad, your out cold. Just make sure someone goes with you, I went alone and for some reason got out of the cab 20 blocks away from my apt., I was alittle out of it.

Same here. I've been on Protonix, Nexium and now Aciphex which is working well. I have GERD and a hiatal hernia. I get endoscopies every 3 years.

Re: Does anyone suffer from Acid Reflux Disease on here?
I have it...Just diagnosed about a month and a half ago. I had this strange sensation of a lump in my throat for weeks. Went to an ENT and he stuck a scope up my nose and down into my throat and saw swelling of my larynx which is caused by constant acid regurg. He put me on nexium and it worked (took a few wks though) but now my ins wont cover it because it's not on the formulary so they switched me to prevacid.

I have it bad. I was officially diagnosed after an endoscopy. Nexium is my saving grace, it has changed my world.

Same exact thing here.
I haven't had a problem in a really long time.
Caffeine and acidic foods are my triggers. So is stress.
