The worst side effect I have had from beta blockers was blood pressure that was too low and a worsening of reflux and GERD. Beta blockers relax the stomach muscles and can cause that. The reason my BP fell was because it was low to start and I only need the beta blocker to lower my heart rate. I was only on atenolol for a short time because I was pregnant at the time and my Dr. found a drug that he felt was safer in pregnancy.

I'm on atenolol. I've been on it for over 8 years and can't really say I have many side effects at all. I also don't take it for BP, just to lower my heart rate and for occasional palpitations. The dosage i'm on is pretty low, the doc tells me (25mg).
