are you a state employee? Becuase you can try other daycares that cater to state employees... the one I use is in hauppauge...not expensive, small and great so far!!

No I am a stony brook student.
For 50 hours a week it is about 7.75 an hour, that seems like a good deal for us with the convinience of me being able to run there anytime in case something is wrong.

oh, for students it's a GREAT deal.... my former co-worker loved their facilities... for DH and I it would be though I forget what the quote was... something freaky like $1100/month

not inexpensive either.... I know from LIF that there are other reputable places close to SBU for 200-300 less a month

I dont get a discount. It is 520 or so biweekly for 50 hours.
I just thought the convinience of being on campus next to me would be worth the extra price. But we dont have money either. All this will be paid by student loans ;/

Re: Does anyone use Stony Brook U daycare?
oh, that's right... you can tell where my mind is today (preoccupied with a major project at work).
yeah, the convenience factor is wonderful. If DC gets sick, you're right there! Also, virtually no commute. But I recall people posting that there ARE places in setuaket and stony brook that are substantially less expensive (and really not that far away). I believe most of the day care is in that yellow building by south p lot, right? If that's the case, you'd have to drive anyway......
SBS building would be super-convenient... I believe they have some pre-schoolers there

For an infant, that is the going rate at a daycare center

Where?
I am not far from SB, and I've never come across a center that is $800 or $900 a month f/t for an infant.

Paying daycare with loans is probably not the most financially wise thing to do. Maybe look into daycare assistance through the county since you are a student.

Here's the breakdown of the tuition: Family Tuition Income Rate (biweekly) $10,000 $318 $15,000 $361 $20,000 $391 $25,000 $418 $30,000 $437 $35,000 $454 $40,000 $471 $45,000 $482 $50,000 $492 $55,000 $502 $60,000 $512 $65,000 $520 $70,000 $527 $75,000 $534 $80,000+ $580
I work at Stony Brook, and know many people who use the Center and are very happy with it. It is large, but well-staffed. The rates seem average The SBS building is preschool for older children. Infants are all in the Center.

I get the loans anyways for living expenses. We really have no other choice. We do not qualify for any state assistance when making over 65k.... not that it is a ton but we are both students so for 1 salary we think its great as it affords hubby to go to law school and for me to be in school and at home. But with 2 babies under 2 i can not focus on school without daycare and I have to graduate in order for us to have normal income eventually.

I can't recall any longer... there was a thread (I believe on the pregnancy board?) last year that listed prices for daycare..... there were 2 places near by for roughly 850/month.... maybe someone else can bump the thread?

Re: Does anyone use Stony Brook U daycare?
Crashing here.... I looked into the center because my DH works at the hospital. The prices were comprable to other places in the area but it didn't work for us for an infant. We may look into it for the future though. We shall see. I have heard many people that send their children there and love it.

Re: Does anyone use Stony Brook U daycare?
I had my DS in the SBU center for a few months. I liked it in general. The head teachers were wonderful for the most part, but I def. had some issues with the place.
A. My DS was 5 months old, and there was a day he literally got ONE bottle of formula for the ENTIRE day.. the rest was water. Now I provided premade bottles of formula, and left a bottle of water and extra powder formula there. The problem was there are a lot of different students/helpers in and out of the room each day, so communication can break down from morning to evening. The good part of it was there was always someone to hold and cuddle him.
B. the cost was a bit high considering they do not provide meals. The learning experience in stonybrook and tudor time were both less expensive.
c. Sickness..DS was sick constantly, this could be true of any day care though, but in speaking with one of his teachers later on, she said sickness is just a huge problem there.
I decided to go with an in home care center. I needed more personalization, one or two people to deal with regarding my DS care, and for me it has worked out much better and is more affordable. DS is not in someones home, it is a seperate buidling just for day care, but a max of 12 kids.
I do not want to put off the SBU center. It really has a lot of pros too..and I think for a child who is a little older it may be wonderful. It's a secure location, front door is locked, so are the classrooms. I also love their outdoor play areas. If you have any questions, just FM me.
