Does anyone use weird (non english words) for "sleep"

When talking to young children...for example to babies my mom, aunts, grandmother always said "do (or go) noni...(pronounced nawnee).

I didn't know if it was just my family or an Italian thing, because that's what they are, but then I recently heard 2 friends say the same thing to their kids and they're not Italian.

Does anyone else use different words for things when talking to thier kids not just "sleep"?

Although in our house we use night night for DS.

My ILs always used "do do" (pronounced dough) My nieces understand that to mean sleep time.

My entire family, as well as DH's family use the word Shluff or Shluffy or Shluffen which is sleep in Yiddish. My mom and grandma used to say it to me when I was little and I know DH's family did the same to him ... so the tradition continues Chat Icon

Re: Does anyone use weird (non english words) for "sleep"

it must be an italian thing because I remember my parents and grandparents using it.

Actually, I remember a song that they used to sing "neenie noni the baby"...I think I may have sang it to my son a few times but I use "night night" when referring to going to bed.

Ah -yes that's the song...I have no clue what the translation is, but I always find myself saying "go noni".

I figured it was an Italian thing, until I heard my non- I talian friends saying it too.

We also use "shuffen" from time to time but I usually shorten it to "shuffie"... "go shuffie Gilly" ; )
I think I do that with alot of yiddish words since they were used by my grandparents to us.

Re: Does anyone use weird (non english words) for "sleep"

When I was little, my grandma used to rock us and say "noni" over and over. She was raised by her grandparents who were from Italy, so I guess it is an Italian thing.

We just say night nights.Chat Icon
