does anyone worry that DH won't be a good labor coach?

Lately, i've been kind of thinking about it and getting worried. DH is not very supportive if he doesn't understand what i'm doing or going through. I have a feeling he's going to be sarcastic and annoying more then anything else Chat Icon

Why don't you get him a bunch of books and force him to read them

Re: does anyone worry that DH won't be a good labor coach?

My only concern is that he has a really hard time seeing me upset or in pain of any sort.

Almost to the point where he shuts down himself.

I plan on talking to him about what exactly I need and will be looking for from him when the time gets closer.

I already know DH will be on the floor passed out. He hates seeing me in pain, especially when he can't do anything about it.

I was so amazed at how great DH was.... I can still remember hearing him say "Come on baby just breathe, it will make it better" and when I didn't listen it was more like "Steph, I said breathe!"

It was pretty funny bc he stayed right at my shoulders the entire time, he refused to look down there.

I am VERY concerned since DH can't even stand the sight of fake blood, let alone the real thing. I hope he will be ok and not make me worry about HIM.Chat Icon

My DH is terrified of blood and needles... he's a big baby... BUT he was AMAZING during the whole thing.... I was totally expecting the nurses to be taking care of him, but he didn't have a problem at all.

Re: does anyone worry that DH won't be a good labor coach?

I was very nervous that he would pass out because he's not good with blood, needles, any bodily functions (I cannot even say the word period around him) Chat Icon I'm not worried about him being encouraging during the labor & pushing (I know he'll be great with that,) but I know he'll be very upset to see me in pain. I told him that I don't want him looking "down there" for the same reason someone else said above (changing his feelings of "that area.") Initially he completely agreed. Then surprisingly, he was really good during the videos at our childbirth class and now wants to watch. I think he'll be a puddle too. He can be emotional (he cried at our wedding and I didn't.)

Re: does anyone worry that DH won't be a good labor coach?

I did worry about about DH being my coach. He also cannot STAND blood and while watching the lamaze video he nearly passed out Chat Icon. Then we watched the bringing home baby video with and he nearly puked when watching the diaper changes Chat Icon He also hates seeing me in pain and I was sure that he would be really upset seeing me like that -

Well truth be told, he shocked me and was the best coach EVER. He was truly there for me every minute of the labor process, was my rock and my biggest cheerleader.. I could not have labored and did my lamaze breathing w/out him. I know that a lot of gross stuff happened during my labor (most of which I've blocked out thank goodness Chat Icon) but DH was wonderful and strong. Everytime I said "I cannot do this anymore" he grabbed my hand and looked in my eyes and told me I could and would Chat Icon

He constantly tells me how proud he is of me and how in awe of me he is after seeing me give birth Chat Icon.. but I feel the same about him - we were a great team!

Ooh and let me add that he is the best diaper changer now, even poopy diapers don't phase him Chat Icon Amazing what happens when the baby is actually yours Chat Icon

Re: does anyone worry that DH won't be a good labor coach?

Wow! So this is a common fear and not just mine. I have been wondering about DH being a good coach, too. He hates blood and anything gory. He also can't seem to handle the idea of things that are out of his control. When he feels helpless he gets nasty and once actually told me to shut up so he could think. I told him he could NEVER do that to me in labor or he would find himself out in the February cold.

I did threaten if he wasn't up for the job, I would have my mom be my coach. He didn't like that and so I think he is going to try his best so he doesn't have to live with the fact that my mom was the coach and not him.

Oh yeah, I just have to say that my dad was my mom's labor coach when natural childbirth was not really popular and she said he was squeamish with blood but he was a champ in the delivery room and really helped her.

My DH is incredible supportive, but I don't think he will be able to handle the stress when I need him. I just Chat Icon that he will bunker down and be with me 100% of the time.
