Does Breastfeeding Always Hurt?

For you BTDT moms, does it always feel slightly painful/uncomfortable? I've been EBF DD since she was born (she's 3 weeks), and my nips are sooooo raw. The lactation consultant said to make sure she's latched right, and I'm thinking she is...she's definitely eating, because she's gaining weight like crazy-- but again, I've never breastfed before, so who knows if the latch is right.

I just don't know how much longer I can deal with the cracked raw parts and crying out in pain when she latches for the first minute or so Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon every time.

I've been putting Lansinoh cream on them, but it doesn't seem to be doing much.

Re: Does Breastfeeding Always Hurt?

The first three weeks were the worst for me. I actually cried.
Now 9 months later, he still is BFing once or twice a day and it is no big deal. I hope the pain eases soon!

I didn't BF for very long, but I remember that her mouth is supposed to cover not just the nipple tip, but the whole colored nipple area....as much as will fit into her mouth. If she learns to just drink from the nipple tip, you will get raw nipples, and she'll still get milk...so you have to break her of the habit.

In the beginning they are always going to feel sore, your nipples have to get use to it, don't worry it will get easier.

You girls are giving me hope, thank you!!!!! Chat Icon I hope there's an end to the pain soon. I really feel like she is latched right, she isn't just on the end, but like I said, I guess I'm not 100% certain that it's completely right.

But you're giving me lots of hope now, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! Chat Icon

I have cried several times, and my body tenses up so much when she's going to latch. I hate that!!!

But good for you for still going at 9 months! Chat Icon

When you BF her is she opening her mouth wide enough?, she should have your whole nipple almost covering all of the brown part of the skin in her mouth.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure she does that. I do the cradle hold, so it's harder to tell than with the football hold I know...but she gets most of it in there, and it doesn't just feel like she's on the tip, that's for sure.

Thank you Chat Icon

You'll be feeling better sooner than you think. It's just a transition period in the beginning. Your breasts aren't used to the constant nursing. Hang in there!Chat Icon

Re: Does Breastfeeding Always Hurt?

I BF my son for 1 year and never had one single issue. Ever. I never had cracked or sore nips, I never felt pain, nothing.

Then DD came along and she was a lot harder to feed. I do believe its all in the latch. After the first week or so, it shouldn't hurt.

It took me about 2 weeks to get used to it both time.

With Maddie I was in much more pain - cracked, bleeding ugh...but it healed & the Lanoish cream is a godsend.

I saw the flames of hell for the first 3 weeks. By 5 weeks a little discomfort, now I don't even realize he is there.

it killed me for about 2-3 weeks. I remember those days. If it hurts you more than that it may be the latch. It never hurt after that. I used lasinoh cream..that helped a little.

Re: Does Breastfeeding Always Hurt?

It's been hurting me also...DD is only 1 1/2 wks, just that initial latch....

They told me to also massage a little of your milk over the nipples when you are done; it naturally soothes them. That's helped me.

Re: Does Breastfeeding Always Hurt?

Sounds like what I had and DD had a shallow latch. She latched on and was feeding but I was in agony. Once I was shown the proper latch the pain was gone. Make sure she is ALL the way on and have a lactation consultant look at her mouth. The problem may be with her palate. Some kids, like mine, have high palates which make it harder to get a proper latch.

Good luck and hang in there- once its corrected all the pain will go away.Chat Icon

Ha!!!! My experience exactly!! So many women have such an easy time with it and say it shouldn't hurt, but holy cow, I felt like daggers were piercing my nipples for three weeks! We also went to an LC three times and she said everything looked good. By week 5, it was significantly better. I think some babies just need time to get adjusted. I am proud to say that on July 30th, I will be BF for an entire year! It has turned out to be a great experience, so just hang in there.

Lansinoh cream helped me a lot. Also, gel pads helped. I found that the regular breast pads rubbed against me & made it hurt more. The gel pads were so comfortable in the begining to soothe the soreness.
Like these:

Soothies

I wish I found them a few weeks earlier.
