Does social media influence your opinion of someone's professionalism?
Curious to hear other people's opinion.
Recently I was deciding among a few people for a business opportunity. One of those people had a link to their FB page. It was filled with drama posts. Some work related. Some non-work related. But a lot of over sharing and lack of professionalism. However, in fairness, it was their personal FB page.
I immediately crossed them off my list. But I thought that maybe it wasn't fair of me to do so.
Would you cross them off your list if you were in my shoes?

I think that nowadays, it should be expected that you keep your Facebook private or else it will be held against you if anything negative is on there. If you're not smart enough to keep that private, I'd question your judgement, personally.

Yes absolutely. Social media affects my opinion of people in any situation, but especially in a professional one.

My FB is private and I don't post anything on there that could stir up controversy. As a rule though, if people are looking for drama, they will find reasons to stir it up and use your profession if need be. I've had it done to me on this site and I know people in similar professions (i.e. teaching) have too.

I think that your Facebook should remain private. If it were me I would pass up the person- it does day a lot about the person. I don't post ANYTHING about my job or anything in appropriate. Just a few pictures and that's it. Keep your private life in private!

Re: Does social media influence your opinion of someone's professionalism?
I take it as a glimpse into who I'm hiring. If someone was all drama, misspellings, etc, yup I judge.
I've seen a potential candidate blogging about his crappy company. I told the hiring manager to hire with caution. His company may be crappy, but you don't put it out there on social media.
On the flip side, seeing a candidate in a leather bikini for Halloween, didn't dissuade me from hiring him. He was a good candidate despite the fact that he did not have FB locked down.

Re: Does social media influence your opinion of someone's professionalism?
what idiot puts the link to their fb page? Of course they're getting crossed off. I'd do the same.
I don't even use my real name on my fb because I don't want it any way linked to my job or potential employers. Its personal. I don't discuss my job on there.
Just out of curiosity was this a very young person?

Does social media influence your opinion of someone's professionalism?
Yes, absolutely. There was someone who I interned with many years ago who is a supervisor at a similar organization to the one at which I work, and she posted a facebook rant condemning a certain population of people that both our organizations regularly serve. I unfriended her immediately because I was that offended by what she wrote, but was really thinking if there was a way that I could notify her director about what she said (ultimately I came to the conclusion that there wasn't).

No - 30's, maybe?
I'm sure they are great at what they do, but I just can't hire someone who puts their business all over social media.
Glad I'm not alone....

Re: Does social media influence your opinion of someone's professionalism?
Yes, but I am personally rather open on my Facebook page and I have a business. We all need to be human sometimes. However, I am very careful to keep my work for clients confidential, I don't make passive aggressive posts and I don't instigate anything.

I have heard of situations in certain professions of people being questioned at their job because they are FB friends with people who do this. I was having this convo recently with a family member whose buddy from law school had this happen to him. I guess the guy was making racist comments and his friend was tagged in the post. The friend's judgment was ultimately questioned.

I have clients ask me all the time if they can be my FB friend. I have told them it's not ethical in my profession. I also know where I work we have to be very careful with what is shared about the company on social media.

Re: Does social media influence your opinion of someone's professionalism?
Absolutely! There is a teacher at my school (I work at a private school) that constantly posts very vain things about herself and she is also friends with students and parents that she currently has. Very unprofessional in my opinion.
