Man Goes 90 Days Without Social Media
http://news.yahoo.com/90-days-without-cell-phone-email-social-media-015300257.html
My favorite bit from the story regarding facebook:
"Yeah, for sure. I think that Facebook is the biggest waste of time, because everyone is just presenting such a filtered picture of themselves. You only put up your best pictures. People only check in when they are at the fanciest restaurant in the city. They only keep things up there that are flattering to themselves. I just think it's like keeping up with the Joneses, but for life. You're never going to get on top of it. Someone's always going to have a better job than you, go on better vacations than you, have a better looking wife than you, or whatever it is. So, it's superficiality on top of superficiality. You never get to see the real parts of people."
So true!!!

Re: Man Goes 90 Days Without Social Media
we waist endless amounts of time online. I am one of those people - when we had no power and i had to reserve my cell phone battery and laptop batteries in case of emergency my productivity skyrocketed. I also enjoyed just starring up from the couch and just daydreaming and brainstorming on new ideas.

Re: Man Goes 90 Days Without Social Media
Sorry, but you can present all of those things and do all those things without Facebook. Facebook doesnt make people want to keep up with the Jonses, life does. People have been trying to keep up with the Jonses long before FB was here... People blame FB for everything now.

Re: Man Goes 90 Days Without Social Media
But going to an extreme the other way isn't always good, either. He admitted that he still needed to go on-line for things. It's also hard to ride your bike to a sibling who lives in another state. There is a happy medium. I do rely on email, because it saves me a lot of time that I use to be with my family. Without email, I would waste a lot of time writing letters, mailing them, and waiting a week or more for a response. I don't go on Facebook, I don't tweet, or follow anyone. I don't text, unless it saves me time.
"Everything in moderation.".... (...as I'm typing this on a social media forum.... )

Re: Man Goes 90 Days Without Social Media
How do we define social media??
I don't have/never had Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, FourSquare, etc...so this guy going without it for 90 days isn't all that impressive to me...its 3 months

I don't think of FB that way. For me, it is just a nice way to keep in touch with people and reunite with long lost friends.

Re: Man Goes 90 Days Without Social Media
There's something about how this guy went it that rubs me the wrong way. He suspends cell service, mooches from a hospital for a while and ends up getting a landline anyway.

This is how I feel about it. Yes, I could (and have) spent hours playing mindless games on FB but now it's mostly about keeping in touch with people. Going online to shop, bank and communicate saves time. I have better relationships with far away friends because it is easier to KIT this way then through the mail or writing on their sidewalk.
