Does the glucose screening need to be done first thing in the morning?

Or can it be done in the afternoon as long as you go a certain amount of hours without eating?

Re: Does the glucose screening need to be done first thing in the morning?

I don't know if it HAS to be but at my last appt my doc said, "You'll want to do it first thing in the morning because you can't eat or drink anything after midnight the night before."

Do you think you'd want to wait till the afternoon without eating or drinking???

Speaking of which, mine is tomorrow....argh I hope I pass Chat Icon

I had to fast for mine so I wanted to go first thing in the morning. But some OB's don't make you fast, so if you don't have to then it's fine to wait until the afternoon I'm sure.

Yep, check with your doctor. I wasn't sure if I needed to fast or not since my dr. didn't mention it either way. I asked the lab and they said nothing after midnight. Well, I just talked to the nurse about my test today and she said that fasting wasn't necessary. Too late for me now! I would see what your doctor wants you to do.

I think you just need a few hours in between eating and the test. Just don't overload on sugar beforehand.

I only had to fast for two hours before the test so I did it later in the morning so I could eat breakfast. You should ask your doc how long they expect you to fast before scheduling the appt just in case though!

I would go first thing in the morning and I would make sure to fast. The girl that drew my blood said, she felt people that didn't fast came back for the 3 hour and then would pass.

My appt is in the afternoon. I was told I don't have to fast. I'll just try to eat somewhat healthy that day.

i had mine at 3:30 in the afternoon. I ate up and until my appt. Came out perfectly normal.

I just stayed away from carbs and fruit. I ate a lot of protein that day.

Re: Does the glucose screening need to be done first thing in the morning?

I have had 2. The first was an afternoon apt. and the second an am appt. I was told not to fast, except for the hr before the test. I ate as I would normally except I avoided sweets and very heavy meals.

Re: Does the glucose screening need to be done first thing in the morning?

I am having mine in two weeks. My appointment is at 2pm. I was told nothing to eat after 12pm, drink the drink at 1pm, blood drawn at 2pm. I was given the drink to bring home.

It must have been fairly similar w/my first baby bc I went and got my blood work done on my lunch hour after drinking the drink at work, and there is no way I would have made it all morning w/o eating.
