Re: Does the news about Sarah Palin change your opinion?

Not at all. But the fact remains that I know next to nothing about her to begin with. Many women are great at work--terrible parents. Many women are great parents and terrible at work or school. Unfortunately, I know nothing about SP as a leader, and I don't know all too much about her as a parent either.
I am going to repeat what I said on the other thread, because it's also my best answer to this question:
Bush and his drinking daughters. Edwards. Clinton. Spitzer. I know waaaay too much about the tabloid side of people's lives, butthere are many things I can't tell you from reading the news. How, exactly, does the tax code currently work, and how does each candidate plan to change it, if at all? What is each candidate's healthcare plan, with specifics? What is the precise structure of Iraq's government (beyond "democracy"), and what is its relationship with the U.S. re: influence in the world sphere? How much money does each candidate feel should be expended to keep NYC safe from terririst attacks each year? Why don't I know these things from reading the news? Because the news is too busy assuming I have an IQ of 2 and cruising facebook for stories about 19 year old kids to educate me as a voter!!!

Re: Does the news about Sarah Palin change your opinion?

If anything it shows me that when faced with very difficult circumstances:

1) a child with downs syndrome
2) a teen pregnancy

Her and her family chose LIFE. She practices WHAT she preaches, KWIM? THAT is very important to me. Anyone can SAY what they THINK they would do in a situation, yet when you are in the situation, do you stand by your beliefs, morals, and values? I believe that Palin does and so does her daughter based on HOW they are CHOOSING to live THEIR lives and the choices that they are making and have made.

Not many candidates past or present; running for president, senate, or the house; democratic, republican, or independent; can say that.

I voted other because I "could" have voted Rep because of McCain and was not too thrilled about Obama.

Once he chose Palin I knew I could not vote for McCain.

That has nothing to do with her baby or her daughter.

I wasn't going to vote for McCain no matter who he chose - but I find all of this attention on her family to be extremely troubling. Focus on her record as Governor, and her plans for this country, then I'll engage in a discussion about her as a candidate. I'm in no position to talk about her as a mother.

Only that her policies on abstinence only education clearly doesn't work.

I would never have voted for her due to her stand on certain issues.

BUT - I find something very suspicious about her entire nomination. I can't believe the Republican party really thought she was the best choice. It's almost like they put her out there to appease certain groups, and when/if there is a call for her to step down, they are going to put up who they really wanted to.

While it doesn't change my view because I have NO intention of voting republican I do wonder the logistics of the situation should McCain/Palin get elected to the White House.

Her whole family moves with her? Will this include Bristol? Does that mean the baby's dad comes too? Do Bristol and the baby's dad stay in Alaska? Also as a new grandmother to a baby whose mother is a teenager where will her focus lie? With the new baby and her own special needs baby or with her role as VP?

IMO I don't think it's the end of the world and if I was voting Repulican I don't think this would be a deal breaker, just some food for thought.

Good points! I agree. I don't think her parenting/family life should reflect on how she would benefit the country.

Does this mean that regardless of what you find out about her you would vote republican just because you are a registered republican?

What if you find out she supports key issues you do not? Will you still support her then?

And If That Isn't A True Blue Miracle

Re: Does the news about Sarah Palin change your opinion?

I'm republican, but I'm torn. The pro-life thing isn't my end all/be all as to whether or not I would vote for someone.

The question I have is:

McCain is 72 - if he kicks off or can't handle the job, do I want her as president? Can she run the country? What's her track record?

I'm still waiting to hear about Obama's experience, but at least Biden has a little more of a track record if he was called on.

Here's another thing, and maybe this is its own thread. She's pro-life, and she hunts Chat Icon What's the rationale there? Chat Icon

As for the whole pro-life debate and I am sorry for jumping all over the place - but I think pro-life is a bad term. I'm not so much pro-life, as I am anti-abortion.

I mean, the fanatics that blow up abortion clinics, are absolutely ridiculous - how can you be pro-life and then kill people

The reality is that I don't think you CAN make it illegal. If you do, you'll only have more cases of back alleys and coat hangers, and kids leaving babies in dumpsters, etc. You'll also have more cases of parents relying on financial assistance because they can't afford the children.

Instead, I think we need more funding and education for adoption, foster care, so that abortion isn't perceived as the ONLY solution. I know that adoption isn't for everyone, and that some people couldn't live knowing they had a child out there.

But my point is there should be enough support behind all of the options and for girls making that decision, so that if someone is faced with it, abortion isn't the automatic solution.

it means I agree with alot of the same issues the republican party agrees with. She's on the republican ticket and agrees with many of the same issues, so yes I am voting republican because that is the closest to what I support. I don't agree with her on everything she supports, but the most important things to me she and McCain support.

And her family has nothing to do with my decision.
