Does Your Baby Stare at The Celing/Lights/Fans A Lot?
Mine does..and it's concerning me a bit. She does make eye contact with me, but she also stares up there a lot.

Lily has always had a thing for lights. The other day she found some at a restaurant quite amusing.

You have a newborn, right? Steven had a love affair with our living room chandelier for the first 4 months. He still is obsessed with lights, but not as much as he used to.

I read the same thing about Autism in an article and my first thought was "BS -- evey baby I know (inlcuding my own) stared at lights for the first few weeks of his life." I was actually annoyed when I read the article because I thought "that's going to strike fear in to every new mother's heart" At 6 weeks it's totally normal.

Babies LOVE lights and fans. At least mine does.
Don't worry yourself. First off, girls are less likely to have autism...it happens, but rarer than boys.
Second...at six weeks, their eyesight is still developing...bright/moving objects catch their attention.
It is so normal for a baby to look at that stuff...as long as the other things happen like smiling at you, at other babies, development milestones I woudn't worry a bit!

Most babies like to look at lights and fans, especially at 6 weeks. My DS has been fascinated with lights and fans for a long time. In fact the first word that he learned to sign and the first word he actually spoke was "lights." I'm a speech pathologist and I've worked with children with autism for many years and know that my DS is FAR from autistic. Just looking at fans and lights is not enough to diagnose a child as autistic. Sure, some children with autism stare at ceiling fans, but there are also many other behaviors that go into the diagnosis. Please try not to worry! I'm sure she's just fine!

Thanks for the responses!
My son has some developmental delays and when he was younger they mentioned he could possibly be on the spectrum (PDD). He was never formally diagnosed with anything other than ADHD though.
He has been in class since Kindergarten with several children that have autism and aspergers, so I know it's more common in boys than girls.
I was actually relieved when I found out I was having a girl only because I know the autism rate is less in girls, but after reading that article and talking to a girl I know with a child on the spectrum about fans and lights, I was getting a bit concerned!

Both DC like lights and fans. As a matter of fact, sometimes, I'll lie on my back and stare at a ceiling fan for a while....  I wouldn't be worried, especially since it sounds like that is the only "sign" DD is showing.

Bella was memerized by our ceiling fans for the first few months...and a certain corner of our apartment that reflected light (my sister said she was looking at the angels  )
I never thought twice about it...autism is scary and I understand people's concerns, but if we looked at every thing our baby did we would go bananas.

i read that article too and felt that it really left a lot to the imagination for parents who have no experience with autism...
I am an autism consultant, and Cailen stares at lights and fans too - but he also looks at me when I speak, smiles at me, looks at DH and smiles at him when he comes home... looks towards noises and other situations - a very alert baby....
A lot of things kids with autism do are things that typical children will do - line up toys and cars, be fascinated with trains, spinning things, lights, etc - but typical kids will also have joint attention, develop language, smile socially, interact with kids, etc. Kids with autism tend not to do those things - they will only line up objects, stare at lights, fans, etc....
This is a scary time because ALL we hear about lately is autism. And what may cause autism, or indicate autism... Just be aware of EVERYTHING your child is doing - social stuff as well as quirky stuff...

i was annoyed in reading taht article too because ryan stared at ceiling fans and light fixtures/chandeliers for like 4 months, and now at 8 months he is totally interactive so i think and have heard that it is completely normal!

I could have written this post myself. DS is 6 wks old as well and loves the fan and lights. I was thinking the same thing today. I sat on the couch with him for 1/2 hr. talking to him and looking at him to see how long he would stare in my eyes, etc. I think they are just fascinated by the movement and by the fact that they are starting to see light. Babies only see black and white at first.

Reading about autism, seeing it so much is scaring me. My son also loves lights, light fixtures. If we go to stores he'll look at the lights a lot. He'll also smile at people. He also has this thumb obsession, we say he 'thumbs' things, he presses things with his thumb, my nose, his toys, everything. See, this could just be a quirk or him exploring but he does it so much. He's a year old. I am wondering if I should be concerned. I wasn't before I started reading all of this about autism.

I agree. My son LOVED ceiling fans as an infant. He's 18 mos today and is developing normally.

As a newborn my DS was obsessed with ceiling fans as well. It was soothing to him.
Actually I'd be concerned if he DIDN'T show interest in them.
The dark color contrast against the white ceiling and if moving (though it didn't even have to be) the motion catches their attention and is stimulating.
Never heard that about the autism link.

My DS started at the shadows (we have 20ft ceilings) forever... he grew out of it. I think their eyes are adjusting and lights and shadows are interesting!

It's totally normal for babies to love to stare at sparkly objects like lights etc. I would never be concerned about a baby that young and autism. As a new mother we worry about EVERYTHING, seriously, don't let this concern you one bit.
ETA: At six weeks their eye eight is still under developed and things like bright lights and moving fans are probably the few things they can see.
