does your male puppy/dog...

lift his leg to go potty?

I am just wondering because when I was growing up I had a male toy poodle, he did not lift his leg...

and I have a male shih tzu now and he does not lift his leg either...

but all of my friends who have male dogs have dogs who lift their leg... so I was just curious as to why mine would not- I don't care-I am actually happy about it- but I wonder whyChat Icon

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

Not all smaller breeds will lift. Also, technically you are not supposed to get a dog neutered until he starts lifting his leg. Many placces though do this according to a dogs age, and not necessarily their signs of maturity. If you have the dog altered before he begins lifting his leg, he may never do it.

Also some small dogs never do. My Min Pin never lifted, but my Chihuahua does.

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

thats what happened with my first dog- we were told to wait until he lifted to get him neutered, well, being new dog owners and not really knowing, we listened, but he never lifted, so, we never had him neutered...

with my new puppy- the vet told us to go by his age- we had him neutered and he never lifts his leg...i've seen him "try it" once or twice, but that's not a lot, we have had him for a year and a few months now

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

Tiny was neutered a while ago and he still squats. He only lifts his leg on the light pole in front of our house

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

My dog squats like a little girl. Sometimes when he by a pole he'll lift his leg a little, but usually, he leans more to one side in the squat position.

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

not when he goes in the backyard, grass, etc...

But by a tree or pole when we walk him, Yes to mark his territory i guess. Even if he has nothing in him, he still goes to the tree and lifts his leg Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

I dunno about it being a small dog thing...my 100 lb lab who is over a year old stretches out to pee and has never lifted his leg (he is not nuetered).

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

Yes. I have a 4.5 lb yorkie that is wee-wee pad trained that lifts his leg. It is a PIA. I tried to train him not to but it obviously didn't work.

I heard the same thing, but we have very few trees anyway. Norton doesn't lift his leg....

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

depending on how tired he is or how much he has to go.

When I take him out his first stop he lifts his leg, then his second stop he stretches, his stop after that if he see's something he wants to mark as "his territory" he'll lift his leg.

whatever makes him comfortable

Re: does your male puppy/dog...

The only time a male dog/puppy will lift his leg is if he smells another's scent. So for example, we just let Peanut out in the back yard most of the time, so all he smells is his own. He doesn't feel the need to "mark his territory". However, when we walk him he will pee on anything and everything and lift his leg higher and higher so that his is the last scent to be left.
