Does your mother's labor experience....

have bearing on yours, like for the pregnancy? My mom delivered all 5 of us 3 weeks early. One of my sister delivered both of her children 3 weeks early and my other sister deliver 2 out of her 3 children early. Do you think that I can assume from this that I will probably go 3 weeks early? Or is it completely random?Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

Good question... both me and my brother were c-sections so I'd never know. My mom said she had a pretty easy pregnancy, which I am too... but she also said she got pretty big for both of us and I'm all belly so I think it's different

from what i've seen and read - it CAN, but it's not a guarantee.

This might be a good thing to cross-post to parenting.....

I hope that's the case.

My mom was three weeks late with me. I already know my dr. won't let that happen. But my mom was induced with pitocin around 9 am and I was born at 10:30.

Sounds good to me!

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

I don't know if there is a correlation yet because I have one DC that I went full term with.

For my mom:
Me-She was 10 days late-went into labor naturally
Brother-Was a week early, went into labor naturally
Sister-My mom was 2 weeks late and had to be induced.

For me:
I was induced 1 week after I was due (and I know my due date was right on).

Good question, I've been wondering about this too. I'm really curious since I was born 5 weeks early.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

my pregnancy has been disgustingly similar to my mom's (with me) so far, so I wouldn't be shocked if delivery is similar. I was born 2 wks early.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

I think the answer is yes and no.

For instance, my mom had pre-eclampsia with her first (me) and a c-section with both kids.

I also had pre-eclampsia with my first (crossing my fingers I do not get it again) and also ended up with a c-section.

However, my mom had serious morning sickness - I did not. I have an irritable uterus and therefor contract and dilate fairly early whereas my mother never felt a contraction in her life!

I was told by the woman who gave my labor class that "whatever your mother's labor experience was with her first child could be similar to your first" it didn't ring true for me because my mom was a week early with me and was in labor for a total of 3 hours and I was 3 days late and was in labor for 16hrs+ and ended up with a C.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

For my first it was very similar to my moms first also (me)!

We were both late in delivering (8 days overdue) and were both in labor for 18 hours staring around the same time (noonish).

It was really weird once I connected it but I don't think it was coincidence.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

not sure, but I'm curious to see who I take after .......

My mother had trouble getting pregnant and then trouble staying pregnant, 2 miscarriages and 1 baby that died at 3 days old. All 3 of us went early, premies..

my sister had 4 children, pregnant 1st try everytime and went 2 weeks late with each.

so far, I'm a little of both, no problem getting pregnant, but had 2 miscarriages.... I'm curious to see if I go late like my sister, or early like my mom?

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

My mother experinced labor with my brother, but ended up with a c section, since back then if you had 1 section all future pregnancies were c's. She had 2 sections. I had lobor with ds #1 only to end up with a c. my 2nd DS was a c.

Both my mother and aunt were C's too. Guess the women in my family cant have babies vag*nally

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

I don't know it might play a small part but there are so many factors. I was 2 weeks late and 8 lbs 5 ozs (I'm an only child so no siblings to compare to). DD was born at 38 weeks and was 9lbs 4ozs and I ended up with a section after 22 hours in labor with merconium and other issues. So we had totally different births and she was 2 weeks early and I was 2 weeks late.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

similar labor - i was 2 weeks late, my mom was induced.. my DD was 1 week late and I was induced. Normal vaginal deliveries.

totally different pregnancies - mom never had M/S, which she had mentioned to me numerous times Chat Icon I had M/S and food aversions. Mom didn't have any stretch marks (which again, she reminded me numerous times), my belly is like a road map.. however, the stretch marks didn't show up on my belly till i was 37 weeks.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

Not with me.

My mom delivered all three of her children early, and apparently each of us popped within minutes, without ANY medication. My mom barely had any labor or contractions.

I was one day late with my daughter, I labored arduously, without medication, for 10+ long hours. Labored another 4 hours or so with medication, made absolutely NO progress, and had to have an emergency c-section.

Re: Does your mother's labor experience....

i sure as hell hope not!! i was 2 and a half weeks late and she was in labor with me for 36 hours!! with my sister, i think she was a week late and she had a very difficult labor and same thing with my brother.. i think she was in labor with him for about 15 hours for her 3rd. she had to be on monkey bars with me, had forceps with my sister and a vacuum with my brother. :(
