Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I am always afraid of this!!!

Newsday

Dog mauls girl's face
5-year-old has surgery to restore part of her lip after PETCO customer's rottweiler attacked her in store

BY ANN GIVENS
STAFF WRITER

January 27, 2006

Diane Christian knows how her daughter loves dogs. So when she saw little Danielle patting a friendly looking rottweiler in PETCO Monday afternoon, she thought nothing of it.

Then she heard a horrible sound - a growl and the snapping of teeth - and looked down to see 5-year-old Danielle's face covered in blood.

"It was very traumatic," said Christian, 41, of Bay Shore. "I picked her up and started running around, looking for someone to help. There was a lot of blood."

After a four-hour surgery to reattach her upper lip, Danielle is still recovering at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. And Christian said more surgeries lie ahead.

"My child will never look the same because of this," she said.

The rottweiler was not on sale at the Bay Shore PETCO; it belonged to a shopper. PETCO has a policy of inviting animals to shop with their owners, a company spokesman said.

But Christian said letting pets interact with customers invites trouble. She's retained a lawyer, Kenneth Mollins of Melville, and plans to take legal action against the dog's owner and/or PETCO, possibly as early as today.

"The store invites consumers in with pets; they encourage interaction. That's a prescription for problems," Mollins said, adding that the dog's caretaker should have known that it was dangerous. The man who took the rottweiler to PETCO was not its owner, Mollins said. The owner is Lori Koch, of Merrick, he said.

Koch could not be reached for comment yesterday, and Mollins said he hasn't been able to reach her since the incident.

Hempstead Town spokesman Mike Deery said the owner took the dog to the town's animal shelter after the incident, and asked that it be euthanized. Deery said the shelter plans to put the dog down within about a week, although there has been no court order mandating the dog be destroyed.

PETCO spokesman Don Cowan said the store allows pets to accompany their owners shopping because it's fun, and they haven't had enough serious incidents over the years to discourage that policy. He said he doesn't know the details of the Bay Shore incident, but PETCO has launched an investigation.

In general, however, he said PETCO expects pet owners to take responsibility for their pets. "It's up to the pet parents to decide whether their pet is docile enough to come into the store."

For Christian, what is especially sad is that her daughter, who loves animals and has a dog and three cats herself, suddenly is afraid of them. "She keeps saying, 'Mommy, he was so cute. Why did he bite at me?'" Christian said.

I agree...especially in that type of setting and not knowing how the dog reacts to that type of petting.

Was the owner asked if the child could pet the dog?

From the news I have been watching all morning about this - no she was not watching her - she heard her scream and came back over to her.
My thing is - this was not this mans dog, it was someone else, why was it with him?

I find it horrifying that the same day she went lawyer shopping-your daughter just spent 4 hours in reconstructive surgery, and you're out looking for a lawyer??? and suddenly she feels that allowing pets in the store makes for an unsafe atmosphere--she knew the pet policy when she walked in the door.

Maybe it was a hired dog-walker?

The owner lived in the Wantagh area. So I have no idea why the dog was in Bayshore. It could have been a family member watching - I guess, but still, if it wasn't my dog, I would never bring it into a pet store.

I really think this was a disaster waiting to happen. I've seen so many scary, aggressive looking dogs in there and I think some people feel like they are in a "safer" environment so its ok to pet the dogs.

If I had a child I would keep them BY MY SIDE in a situation like that!!!

I agree....that is also why I WOULD never pet a stranger's dog.
Why did she let the girl wonder. I dont think it is Petco's fault al all.

I don't either. Poor kid, though, to have to suffer for others' irresponsibility.

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

Poor kid, my friend in 7th grade had her lip bite off by her own rottie puppy. I think the dog was just excited and snapped. But it was years of surgery to get her lip looking normal.

I am scared of dogs in general. My poor kids will probably not pet a dog until 18.

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I don't care if that dog was a poodle or a doberman...the parents are to blame as well. Granted, yes, that dog shouldn't be allowed to walk around the store alone...but the parents should have kept their daughter away from this animal. There are certain dogs that have a reputation...rottweilers being one of those dogs. I also don't think it's "cute", as her mother said on the news last night, to see your child petting someone else's dangerous dog. That poor child has to grow up with scars because of two ignorant people. Such a shame.Chat Icon

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

i feel bad for the girl but that pisses me off.

As a dog owner, I never let small children I do not know handle or pet my dog. You don't know how the child will act, if it will pull at your dog or do something for the dog to react.

Unfortunately, even though the woman wasn't watching her kid - WHEN SHE SHOULD HAVE- the dog owner will get sued & have to pay through the nose. People seem to forget that dogs are still animals- no matter how well they are trained, we cannot control every reaction they have to every situation.

My two dogs weigh 5 pounds or under each- and I STILL don't let people touch them because sometimes they snap when threatened (they are small) and sometimes I am afraid they will be hurt (if a little kid is too rough with them a leg can easily be broken). When I shy away from people, they tell me my dogs are mean, when they aren't.. but they are animals- not humans. They don't have our reasoning skills.

I have a feeling that lawyer "found" her probably at the hospital.
