Re: Dog Owners who work full time

Personally I could never leave my dog on a regular basis for 12 hours.. If I had to (considering my curcumstances changed) I would send her to doggie day care or I would pay a person to come in for an hour a day to play with her or walk her.. I just couldnt leave her home all of those hours.. That's just me.. I am not judging anyone who does it but I could never.. I would be a guilty nervous wreck. So if you think you can do it guilt free than go for it.. But its a permanent situation.. you cant just get rid of the dog once you get him/her either.. This a tough decision..

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

Lola is home in her crate (which I call the apartment - like someone else said co-op, b/c it's huge) from about 7:00 until 5:45 - 6:30 every day -
She's totally fine. She sleeps all day .....
She can't be trusted to have full run of the house, or even be confined to the kitchen, she is used to, and comfortable in her crate.

She's a small Yorkie w/ a ton of energy and she gets full run of the backyard and house once we're home .......She's fine. She gets bathed every week and brushed every day - she goes for long walks in the preserve, she runs like a lunatic around the yard, she eats cheese, and roast beef and steak and burgers and fresh italian bread .....She sleeps on a $2,000 mattress w/ us every night - Chat Icon And while we bust our butts at the office all day, she gets to snooze and lick that peanut butter junk out of her kong .........She's a dog !! Trust me, she's got a good life !!!

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

I agree with the OPs. if you are going to be gone 12 hours i wouldnt get one.

We are gone about 8 hours and that is enough.. the dog holds it that long.

honestly, if the dog is going to be alone for that long, I wouldn't get one.

See, I don't think this is a fair blanket statement. Our dog is totally fine with being left alone for that long and always has been.
If the dog gets enough exercise and is given plenty of love and attention when you are home - it's not that much of an issue.

i agree...
Shea is home for 9 hours a day .. and she just gets all the attn in the world when we come home... she is pefectly fine!

ITA!

When we got Daisy, we both agreed to come home on our lunches and take her out to play, walk, eat, etc. But we also work less than 15 miles away from home, so this was easy for us.

We did this for the first 6-9 months we had her and now we don't come home for lunch as she can hold her potty breaks and we play with her when we get home.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

I would not leave a dog alone for 12 hours. When we got Brody, he was crated from 9-2. DH gets home at 2 pm. He is almost 2 now and we leave him loose. We tried leaving him loose at a younger age becasue he grew so big but he chewed things, he is calmer now and can be left a lil longer alone.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

We were lucky because when our dog was still in crate training, I was only in school in the mornings so he wasn't really in the crate for longer than like 4 hrs. Now he has the run of the house, but he gets to AM walks before we leave (around 7:30-8AM), then DH comes home to give him lunch and a second walk (around 12-12:30) then DH is home around 5-5:30 for dinner and another walk. Then I'm home at 6:30 for his last walk.

12 hrs will be a long time for a pup to be left in a crate.... Are there any alternatives? Like maybe having a family member sit with the pup for a few hrs a day or hiring a dog walker ?

Agreed. Coop is left home for about 8-9 hours a day... he doesn't pee or poo when he's left home, we leave him water and plenty of toys... and when we get home, he's the focus of our attention and we try not to leave him home during the weekend if we can help it (it we're going out at night, we'll ask if we can drop him off at my parents house for a a few hours).

okay, not sure what you are looking for but....

suffolkcountyunleashed.org

has a dog that comes certified trained. He's only 1 year old.
Not sure exactly what they mean, but I'm thinking if you call them they could guide you as to what to look for.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

when we got our first dog, we got an older dog (2 years) that was already trained, we got her from Little Shelter in Huntington. I was home with her for a week and then she was home about 9 hours 4 days a week. When we got our puppy at 8 weeks, 3 years later, DH was in NYPD and worked nights, so someone was home all the time, except for maybe 2 hours, not abig deal.

DH went to days 2 years ago, his tour doesn't change so 4 days a week they were home alone for 9-10 hours. The older one had run of the house, she's a perfect dog. The younger one was in his crate until 1.5 years ago - we "weened" him off it. They are only blocked from the living room.

They have each other and I leave the TV on for them in my bedroom.

but was this from the start? Brutus would just sleep if we left him alone NOW but did Cooper do well from the beginning?

We have a doggy door so the dogs can come in and out and play in the yard/use the bathroom as needed.

We got Misty when she was 8 months old and she was crated when we went to work. At the time, she was only crated for 8 hours or more a few days a week as DH had a different job.
Within a few months, she was being crated for 10 hours a day. Honestly, to a dog there isn't much of a difference in two hours.
When she was about 2 we started experimenting with leaving her loose in the house and found that she would chew things after 4/5 hours...so we would have her in the crate if we were gone for longer periods.
When she was 3 we started experimenting again and she was fine alone and with the run of the house, so we've left her like that since.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

Another thing to consider is the fact that if you're saving a dog from a shelter, the dog being alone in your house for 10 hours is better than sitting in a shelter with no love at all Chat Icon

Thanks for answering Chat Icon I have no experience with this stuff bc Brutus is one of four dogs that "work" with DH. Chat Icon

Nope... not even a little bit. He never really took to the crate, so we went thru a lot of trial and error before we found what works best for him during the day.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

well, dh and i work opposite schedules so generally speaking, the dogs are only by themselves from about 1:30pm til 5:30pm. if i am going to be more than an hour late, i have my mom come let them out... or if there is a rare day where we work the same hours and they're going to be without us from 5:30am til 5:30pm - i have either my mom come pick them up and bring them to her house around 10am and i pick them up on my way home, or dh's parents will come and sit with them from about 10-1. i feel sooo guilty leaving them alone for extended periods of time. quinn, who is 3.5 is well behaved and will go on a pee pad if he needs to go, and he roams the house free. ava is 1 and we leave her in one of those puppy pens, where she has plenty of room, a food and water bowl, a blanket and some toys. she will hold going to the bathroom, but we won't leave her to roam free because she is a horrible chewer and has destroyed our house.

LOL, sounds like our boys. Our dogs are alone for 12 hours a day and when we got our first, he was alone by himself as a puppy for 10+ hours a say. I felt horrible leaving him when he was still a baby, but we gave him all our attention every minute we were home. We moved and now he hangs out (sleeps) in the mud room all day. I still felt bad with him being alone and so we got another dog. He's much happier to have a friend and they are best buds. They both chill in the mud room with pads. they go on the pads during the day but hang out outside for a while as soon as we get home. They are very happy boys!

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

We leave him at home. I work 7-3 and my DH works 8-430 and comes home for an hour at lunch. So it works out, he is only alone for about 4 1/2-5 hrs at one time. THe rest inbetween is short.

They have doggie day care but it can get a little expensive. Maybe not so bad if you do it part-time, like 2-3 days a week.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

DH and I have different hours so my dog is in his "crate" aka "condo" for a few hours in the morning and then sleeps (AGAIN) with DH during the day.

But on days that we both work the same schedule (like today) he is in his crate for about eight hours. He is usually very good about not going in his crate but if he does (we leave rags in there) its ok because I don't expect him to have to hold it for that long.

I have an english bulldog that is 4 years old and we rescued him in February. I wouldn't recommend getting a puppy but rather an older dog that is crate trained.

Honestly, when I am working from home or DH is with him, he sleeps in the same spot for hours at a clip. So, I dont think its much different.

Bullys are notoriously big sleepers --- mostly all day.

Re: Dog Owners who work full time

We have a dog walker that comes in the middle of the day and again later if we are stuck at work or something. We used to crate her when she was a puppy. She's pretty lazy and I'm pretty sure she just sleeps on the couch all day.
