dog trainer

We just got a trainer for our 2 yr. old german shephard.. The trainer believes in using a choker collar & hitting him when he doesn't listen. It made me feel uneasy, but DH thinks, and has heard from others he is a good trainer. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Re: dog trainer

Do you mean actually HITTING your dog? I would never agree to this. It seems like a good trainer would never have to rely on abuse!!!! Your dog should not fear you.

As far as the choker collar...we do not use one but I know there are many trainers who think it is effective. I would have less problem with this if the training didn't also involve hitting your dog.

IMO - I would RUN away from this trainer.

ETA - we use best friends dog training They will come to your house and do a free assesment of your dog.

Re: dog trainer

We just had a trainer come to the house yesterday. His name is Jason and his from Best Paw Forward. So far, we seem to like his methods. He too suggested a choke collar and some other collar that I don't know the name of.

I have practiced some of the techniques he showed us and so far so good.

Re: dog trainer

No way! Hitting only causes more aggression and you will be in a forever battle with your dog over who is more dominant and who can be more agressive.

Get rid of him. Positive reinforcement of good behaviors is the way to go

Re: dog trainer

I don't think the choke collar is bad - I've always trained my dogs with a choke or prong collar...but the hitting is not good. It's negative reinforcement and dogs tend to respond to positive reinforcement.

I agree with the BarkBusters idea...much more long term and if you have a problem a year down the road they come back for no extra $$$.

I would not use this trainer. The choker collar most trainers make you get. I was against them too but i have a lab boxer mix who pulls me around when he is on his harness or his regular collar. I use a choker now and it's almost at the point where he doesn't need it anymore. But when they tell you to HIT your dog when they are bad. THATS ONE HORRIBLE TRAINER! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I would go elsewhere.

I heard Toni's grooming and training in West babylon is good. I saw a training class at gardiners park once and all the dogs were amazingly good. I asked some of the pet parents about the class and they siad the trainer was amazing. I am thinking of taking my big guy there.

Re: dog trainer

I would NOT use that trainer. You should never hit a dog and I don't like those choke collars.

Last year Schultz (my 100 lb German Shep/Akita mix) needed some "direction"...I took him to dog school - 8 weeks - I don't know where you live - but it was in Ronkonkoma - the woman's name is Evelyn Rossi. It was a class with about 8 dogs. We practiced alot and he is great on the leash and will walk next to me off leash, and he listens alot better now. He isn't perfect, but who is?

Re: dog trainer

The other collar danielle was talking about before is called a Prong collar. Im not sure which collar is safer for Tiny, but the Trainer recommended us to use the prong collar. From what i have been reading the choke collars can damage a dogs trachea.....and that is not something I want to happen.

No way. Report them. Don't just stop using them....report them.

Choker collars should be low on the list regarding training, and hitting is NEVER acceptable.

Thank goodness you trusted your instincts.Chat Icon

The prong collars can do damage too....talk to your vet. Especially on a Chihuahua. They have very delicate skin and sparse muscle on their necks (comparative to Rotties or Akitas).

I can't understand why that would even be used on a CHI Chat Icon On a big dog that PULLS you down the block maybe.

In all honesty, a Chi should not wear a regular collar at all, they should wear a harness. I do have a collar for my chi, but it is only to hold his ID tag. I never attach a lead to it, and it comes off when he is crated.

Re: dog trainer

I cannot put a harness on Tiny. He always manages to get it off. I have had 3 different types and even the one that is like a shirt. I think it is called the Puppia or something like that.

The prong collar is safe as long as you use it the right way, and we do.
