dog trembling this morning

This has never happened before. My Maltese has not been able to stop trembling. We are going to the vet soon but I was wondering if anyone experienced anything like this. Any thoughts on what it could be.

Could it be the sudden cold weather. He sleeps on a large padded bed on a tile floor and the floor was freezing. It's too soon to put on heat but I don't want him sick because of it. Would a 9 lb. dog react so suddenly? I don't remember anything like this last year.

My dog does that when he is cold. He was shaking last night and he just climed under the blanket with us. But I would still go to the vet it could be something else.

Katie shakes when she is cold- especially after a bath. She goes under some blankets and is fine after.

The trembling lasted almost two hours this morning and it stopped when he started wallking on the street and during the drive in the car. We went to the vet and he found nothing wrong. The urine test showed nothing wrong either and when we got home, he finally was willing to eat. I was so happy for about five minutes...and then he threw up.
Now I'm waiting for the vet to call back. I hope it's nothing serious. He's not even 4 years old.

Re: dog trembling this morning

Okay, I have a few questions...

While he was shaking was his body rigid or relaxed?

Was he able to walk?

Was he salivating a lot?

Thank you for your encouragement. So far so good. He was hungry after he threw up and I've been giving him about 10 kibbles at a time. He seemed satified and he's been sleeping all afternoon. Thank God this all happened on my day off.
Never did hear from the vet again though...Chat Icon

Re: dog trembling this morning

I would say his body was kind of rigid - like he was scared and just standing still. He was able to walk but wasn't interested in doing so other than to come to us to be picked up. The little walking he did was slow and tail hanging down. He wasn't salivating and he wasn't making any sounds or anything else out of the ordinary.

As far as the rest of the afternoon went, so far so good. He was hungry after he threw up and lively for a while. He was begging for some lettuce (which he usually gets a tiny bit of during our lunch) but I didn't dare offer him any. I gave him about 10 of his kibbles at a time, spaced about 15 minutes apart. After half his usual portion he seemed satified and he's been sleeping all afternoon. Thank God this all happened on my day off.
Haven't heard from the vet this afternoon though...Chat Icon

i experienced the same with my dog - brought her to the vet in a panic, and found nothing wrong.

i did my googling, and found this article very interesting:

Thank you very much Sticklee There was some interesting information at that site.
May I ask, what kind of dog do you have? How long ago did this happen? Has it happened again?
Did you dog happen to have any vomiting also?
I was told by some women at work today that it could have been caused by pain of some sort and he worked himself up into a frenzy after being in pain and then going to the doctor. He may have gobbled his food too quickly after he started to feel better and then brought it up.
Gee, sounds like I need a psychoanalyst for him. Seriously though, I do hope your episode, and ours, is a one time deal. I hate to see them suffer.

Re: dog trembling this morning

Think about whether anything at all has changed in your house. I had a very fearful dog and it could be something like a new item in the decor at your house. That dog used to tremble if he noticed a truck parked outside, so he was a wreck when the neighbors were having lots of work done.

Re: dog trembling this morning

Ssdbk, so it sounds like an anxiety thing to you? I'm trying to think back to that morning and I can't pin point anything. There was absolutely nothing new in the house. In fact my husband was home that morning and he loves the days when he doesn't go to work because they play and garden in the back together. I guess there is always a chance something was going on outside that I wasn't aware of or didn't hear. Don't they say dogs have very acute hearing and pick up things we can't?
So far it hasn't happened again and it will be a week tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks for your response.

PS... he is a fearful dog so you may be right!
