Feeding your dog in the morning.... QUESTION?!

Cooper normally eats breakfast anywhere between 4:30 and 5:30 in the morning. But lately, at least once a week, he's getting up at 2:30 in the morning to eat!

He did this last night, so I got up and took him out and brought him back into the bedroom with us. But he didn't go to sleep, he just kept walking back and forth, standing on his hind legs at the edge of the bed and scratching at the door. Finally, I just got up and fed him. I hate feeding him that early because than he'll be so hungry earlier in the day.

Has anyone come across this problem? If so, what do you/did you do?? Any adivce??

TIA!

That stinks!

When Bella and Lexi pulled this on me, I'd sternly tell them "go to sleep". Usually, they would just have to go to the bathroom. Occasionally, I'd give them a teeny teeny piece of a treat, especially if I knew they ate their dinner earlier than usual.

If you think giving your dog a treat may make the situation worse, don't do it. Otherwise, give a stern "go to sleep" and when all else fails and he's really hungry, give a teeny piece of that treat (followed by a stern, "go to sleep").

HTH!!! I have to tell ya though, I'd rather deal with this than my 4yo Yorkie still eating poop!!! YUCK! Chat Icon

Thanks! Next time I'll give the "go to sleep" command. And trust me, I've dealt with the poop-eating, so I totally know what you're going thru Chat Icon

If my dogs would wake up early I would tell them to "go back to bed" and they would lay back down on their bed...our puppy has yet to learn this command Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It truly works if you stick by it.

Now, it works SO well for my two that I oversleep!!! They would start trying to wake me up at 4am, and I'd keep telling them. Then, my alarm would go off, and I'd pull a "5 more minutes" routine, and they would stop trying to wake me up. I've told them that so much, now they actually listen.

It's ALL my fault! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
