dogs and kids

does anyone have any tips on getting dogs aquainted with babies and kids? I have a chihuhua and she is very jealous and I am afraid she will bite. I heard that for a newborn it is good to have them smell the receiving blanket before they come home and then the day you bring them home let the dog smell the baby so they recognize the smell. Any other ideas? TIAChat Icon

Actually my DH bought home a used Chat Icon diaper too.

Another suggestion - when you come home - let your DH and the baby stay in the car.
You come in the house alone.
And hang out with the dog for a little while, then go back out and you, the baby and your DH go into the house.

eta - also if the dog does not seem interested, do not force the dog. He/she will come around eventually.

We did something similar. DH carried the baby in the house, so I could let Maggie out of her crate like I always do.

My dog loves my kid, but she is an overly friendly beagleChat Icon

I could have wrote this word for word (minus the dirty diaper part) Chat Icon

Molly is just now starting to pay attention to Jack (and he is almost 8 weeks old)

Baby Steps with the dogs - they will come around in their own time.

Also let who ever the dog perceives as the alpha to bring the baby in the house. This way he will be more accepting if the leader shows him it's nothing threatening.

And never leave a baby or child unsupervised with any animal.

But what if your dog thinks she's the Alpha Chat Icon - which is the case in this house.

Did that help the situation?

We plan to let the dog sniff the blankets and baby's hat ahead of time. DH will carry the baby in. I have been playing the Preparing Fido CD with baby sounds. My dog ignores it while I get a huge headache!!!!!!! My dog is an alpha if we let him be one. Most people think he will be fine with baby. I am on guard, though.

Re: dogs and kids

Years before we were TTC, we started getting the dog used to kids (our niece was a baby at the time, so she would be over, too).

We would playfully tug on his ears, poke him in the eye, tug his tail, etc. Basically, everything a little kid does to a dog without being mean to them. After a while, he barely even noticed when we were doing stuff to him.

We definitely enforce the alpha rules in the house. DW is alpha, I am beta, DC are whatever letters come next, and the dog is Omega. We make sure he knows that. He is a 50lb doberman/shepherd mix, and could easily cause a lot of damage if he wanted, so we have to make him think he is at the bottom of the totem pole.

Re: dogs and kids

Dh brought home a onesie that the baby had wore to our dog, sandy when I was still in the hospital.

when we came home with the baby, I went in first and greeted Sandy, she had not seen me in 4 days....Dh then came in with the baby and set the car seat on the floor, we let sandy sniff the baby all she wanted, she even gave her a few Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sandy has been GREAT with DD, even better than I thought she would be...I am so happy with her and the way she loves DD

Honestly - I don't know - she sniffed it for a little while, DH said it was like she was saying what the heck is that.

Also, another thing that DH did was, since I had never been seperated from the dog before, he would bring home the t-shirt I was wearing in the hospital that day. Almost to say - I was around mommy today. DH said she would take the shirt from him and put it on her blanket. I guess it helped her

Re: dogs and kids

I got a CD - Preparing Fido - and played it for Scout before we had the baby.

I think it helped....
