Donate to LIFamilies in need for the holidays!
For those of you who do not know me my name is Dana. I am somewhat new to LIFamilies parenting (my DS is only 6 weeks). I am a kindergarten teacher that is currently a SAHM. Every year in school, my class donated to families in need during the holidays (unused/unworn gifts)) that live in the district. I started to think that maybe there are some families on here that might need a little help this season and would love to do something for them to brighten their holidays! With the economy the way it is and so many people unemployed (not by choice)... I know this could help tremendously!
This is my proposal for those who would like to receive... Just as it was done in my school the families would name completely anonymous. If you would like to participate you can FM me directly and it would be done privately, discreetly, and names would NEVER be disclosed. I would need to know your child's age and size so appropriate gifts can be bought. You would need to be able to pick up the gifts for your child/children at my house (Smithtown). Once I know who is participating, I can post ONLY the age/gender/size of your child so appropriate gifts can be bought. Gifts will be unwrapped so you know what your child is getting and so I can distribute them properly.
To those who would like to donate... who would like to participate? The gift can be as little or as much as you would like. The gift would need to be unwrapped and sent by December 1st. More information will follow once I know who is interested in receiving and donating. I can only do this if people are willing to participate on both ends. The season is all about giving and although this is anonymous... what better way to celebrate the holidays then to make someone elses a little brighter!!! Thanks in advance!

I think this is a GREAT idea!
I adopted a family last year through the middle school in KP bc its such a great thing to do for the holidays!
I would TOTALLY participate!
Would this be a wishlist type of thing, like we anonymously adopt a family or you just send out a general list of needed items and we can buy as few or as many items off the list as needed?
Would this wishlists from the family be toys and clothes or just clothing?
Would parents be included or just the children?

I think it's a great idea - but maybe Ron can be the "middle man" or another LIF Admin this way the posters can REALLY be anonymous, KWIM?

This would be fine with me! However, as I said I am sort of new to LIF so I am not sure how that would work. Someone just has to direct me with doing this part lol

I agree, and I don't know whether they would ever be able to do that, since it's not like Ron could request W-2 forms. It's just that people have such different ideas about what "in need" means--I would love to participate to someone who cannot afford food or toys, but not to someone who doesn't spend $150 on a bday cake and therefore considers themselves needy, KWIM?

Agreed! I would hope no one would abuse it either because they would ultimately be taking gifts away from families who would really need them. However, I am not sure how we could validate this? Ideas?

Tough spot, but I would still donate and "hope" that it is going to someone truly in need and not someone abusing the system. Even if there is ONE person who takes advantage, Id be OK with that (sort of) if there are 5 families who truly got the help they needed to make the holidays special.
I do think they need to at least FM Dana with the reason for their hardship and WHY they cannot provide gifts, not just be able to go "Put me on the list, I need help"...KWIM?
Plus hopefully the fact that Dana posts on here would be a deterrent bc she would know if they ever post about getting $300 photos done, or going on a shopping spree, or what ave you.
Im just going to trust that people are good and hope for the best!

I was planning on just doing children. I wanted to leave it up to the parent to decide whether they wanted help with toys (it is the holidays) and/or clothing. I was planning on just posting a generic list so no one could make out who the person was. Such as....
Boy 6 months (clothes only) Girl age 2 size 2T (clothes and toys)
Then as the gifts come in I can distribute them properly.I am totally open to better suggestions or ideas though!

I agreee, this is where i was coming from. I would donate and hope that it goes to someone in need. I rather help and hope for the best than to let abuse deter me.
Im excited about this

OK thats cool, I was just curious. Thats probably a better way anyway if there are say only 5 families in need, that more than 5 people can help out! Plus, if say there is a 6month old boy in need of toys, he gets more than one or two, bc more people can participate.
Maybe they need to have at least say 500 posts or something, so we know its not someone who just signed up or created a fake name just for the gifts, and they are truly an active member of this community?

Agreed! As far as abusing this gesture, I am trying to look at it from the person on the receiving side. I don't want to belittle or embarrass those who truly are in need by trying to prove they actually need help. I think the 500 post idea is excellent! Other than that, I am hoping that this is an online community of honest mothers who are whole heartedly here to help others as well a receive help. After all, that is why I am here! There are some nutty people in the world but I am hoping this little LIFamilies world is free of them!
