DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
I'm sure this has been posted but I am LIVID. I bought my father a gift card a year or 2 ago.. don't remember but I had to have because he found one that said 'From Aidan' on it...
he tried to use it recently and the ENTIRE THING has depreciated in value.
It was worth NOTHING. I paid 25.00 for it, so it's not like they didn't receive the money....
SO WHAT my dad's a little slow with using his gift cards.
he called Visa screaming at them... it's just not right.
If someone PAID for the card, who cares how long it takes for a person to use it?

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
I just bought a few and on the back it says that after 7 months the value will deplete a certain amt each month until it expires or there is no value left on the card.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
Unfortunately, this is becoming the norm.
I had a gift card to boulder creek that I got last Christmas. I just took it a few weeks ago and saw that it expires after 1 year.
We had a nice dinner at Boulder Creek last week

Yup, I always check that. I usually buy the MC ones - they last almost 12 months.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
I did this for my stepkids. I got them credit cards so they could start iTunes accounts (I was NOT giving them my credit card number, I'd have $2394729 worth of charges from them downloading songs). I put $25 on each of them. My stepson put his email address on the card so he felt like an adult. He kept telling me they kept emailing him about the card depleting in value. How can they do that? I paid $25 on the card, plus $8 for an activation fee. That's BALLS if you ask me.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
after a certain amount of time - 7 months to a year - they start to charge you a certain amount per month to keep the card active.
i think it's in all the small print (though in some cases - it's on the back of the card)...

Once i noticed that small print or whatever, yes - i tell people...but that's just me...i'm overly paranoid about that stuff!
I want to say this has been happening for about 2 years now...(they may have been shortening the time period before they charge you)...
GOOD LUCK with the bridal shower cards!!!!!!

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
I think its the person's responsibility to use the card in a reasonable timeframe.
I have never seen a gift card expire earlier than a year. If it takes you more than 12 months to use something that was essentially free, then there really isn't much I can say about that.
It won't stop me from buying gift cards.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
I don't understand why we take cash that can be used any time anyhere and convert it to something with no more monetary value than we spent and much more limited use. I used to buy them too but no more. I am so over gift cards period.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
Unfortunately, a lot of GCs do that. That happened to me with a Pier 1 card, I waited like a year to use it and it depleted. ALWAYS check the back of the GC, because more and more places are starting to do this

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
This is why I generally don't buy gift cards in general. If I am going to give a monetary gift, I give cash or a check.
Don't get me started on the people who take 5 years to cash the check though........

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
Thankfully this is illegal in the state of CA. Gift cards and gift certificates cannot expire. But I wouldn't buy anything that required an activation fee anyway. That's just throwing cash away.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
My company does this too - it's also that we don't have to keep every single gift certificate open on our system for eternity and we can archive the monies and records yearly.
I'm pretty sure it's legal as long as the actual gift card or gift certificate says when it's going to expire.

Re: DON'T buy Visa Gift Cards
Yeah . I hear so many crazy things about gift cards bc of this economy. That's why I didn't get any for anyone this year. I am sorry that happened, I am sure it's very stressful.
