Don't know why this is happening...

For the past 2 nights in a row DS has refused his last feeding. His eating schedule is this:

Morning: A bottle anywhere from 4-6 oz then cereal then fruit

Afternoon: A bottle anywhere from 4-6 oz then fruit and veggies.

Early Evening A bottle anywhere from 4-6 oz and then cereal and fruit

Later on in the evening between 9-10 he has a bottle anywhere from 4-6 ounces.

For the last 2 days he has been refusing the last feeding. Could he be full? from eating 3 meals a day? He's never done this. There was never a problem with the last bottle. He had a lot more milk during the day and maybe that's why? Like he had 5oz, a 5 1/2 oz and then a 6 oz bottle during the day plus his solids.

He went to bed at 10:30pm and woke up with a totally dry diaper. Is it good that he went to sleep with his last meal being at 5:45 pm??? I always feed him every 4 hours sometimes 5 so it's not like I did it too early. His last meal was at 5:45 then I tried giving him his last bottle at 9:45. I stopped when he refused waited 20 more minutes but he still refused.

What could be happening. Maybe he's about to start teething again? But he hasn't refused or been fussy with any other feedings. at least not yet. If he does then I'll know for sure that something is up and he's probably just teething again. What concerns me is that between 5:45 until the time he went to bed at 10:30 he's had no fluids. Not until he ate again at 9 am.

I wish I had an answer for you. Maybe he is teething or is full. Sometimes I wish they can speak at this age and tell us what is wrong with them. I feed DS around 7:00pm and he drinks his bottle around 8:00pm and that is his last feeding. I never had a situation where his last feeding is around 5:45. Is he still sick?

He never was sick. He refused his 1 pm bottle and I tried again at 2 and he had 2 1/2 ounces. He did have his solids. I'm not sure if I should space out the hours or assume he is teething again. He already has 2 teeth.

Re: Don't know why this is happening...

The one thing I have learned in my 10 months of parenting is just when you think you have figured something out, they change!

How old is he? It could be teething, or he is just full from all the solids?

Not really sure, but if he doesnt want the bottle, I wouldnt force it on him. I guess see what happens and if it continues and he sleeps through the night, it is ok. Bring it up at your next doctor appt too.

My DD is 10 mos old and drinks about 24-30 oz of formula a day plus 2-3 solid meals a day. Some days she eats more, some less, but just like us, some days she is hungrier, and some days not.

ETA: maybe space out the solids (for example skip the lunch veggie/fruit and just give a dinner solid or skip one of the cereal feedings)

It's so true...will we ever be able to figure these little creatures out...lol

He kinda of plays with the nipple and bites down on it. He cries when the bottle goes in his mouth. Which is the way he acted the last time he was teething and then the second tooth came in. I will continue to try and feed him every 4 hours maybe 4 1/2 and see how the next day or two goes before I speak to the doctor.

I dont think we will ever figure these cute lil creatures out....but half the fun is learning! Maybe when they are 35!

My DD doesnt eat as much when she she is teething, she has 5 teeth now - the first few were rough for her. She also refused bottles when she had an ear infection last month. Is he cranky and pulling on his ears at all?

No he's his usual happy self. Babbles and squeals as usual. It's when you give him the bottle is when he start crying.

Like I said he acted this way when he was last teething. I guess I have to wait and see how the next day or 2 goes.

Sounds like another tooth is coming in, esp since you say he is chewing on the nipple...

He bites down hard on it and doesn't let go...I have to yank it out. Then sometimes when it's in his mouth he pushes it to the side.

I looked inside his mouth and didn't see any signs of it though. No swelling or anything. Perhaps it's getting ready...

Re: Don't know why this is happening...

If it's only that one bottle I wouldn't worry too much about it and I don't think it's teething if it's just one. My suggestion would be not to give the bottle with the dinner, but rather give him his dinner then a bottle later. It sounds like he was just full. This way you'll know he got something closer to bed time. I'm also curious why he's going to bed so late? 10pm seems awfully late so I'm thinking maybe he was too tired for the bottle. That has happened to us with Ellie once before. She didn't want it, didn't want it, conked out and that was it for the night. So from that point on we made sure we gave it to her before it got too late. It could also just be that he's ready to go down to 3 bottles per day. Ellie gets 3 bottles and 3 meals b/c that's what my Ped said she'd eventually get to.

ETA: Ellie always tries to chew on the nipple of the bottle and no sign of any teeth yet. She's been doing it for some time now. Also she always pushes the nipple off to the side when she's done eating, that's how I now that she's done.

Well for the past 2 nights he did refuse the last feedings of the night. True he is tired but he always taken those feedings. His eyes would be half closed but he took the feeding.

This is similiar to the way he acted when the first two teeth came in. That's why I am going to give it another day or two. If I go down to 3 bottles a day then that means he would need to drink more and that's always a gaurantee that he will do that. Cuz if he only wants 4 then it wouldn't be enough. I don't know the only thing I can do is wait and see. In the meantime I don't want this kid to be dehydrated if he is only going to have an ounce or two or none at all. I can't give him water cuz he refuses that. He eats his solids but I don't think he's getting any fuids from that.

Re: Don't know why this is happening...

do you give him the bottles and food back to back? MAybe its filling enough and he's not as hungry?
Luciano could never have both bottle and food. He's happy with either, and if he has both theyre spaced apart at least a good hour.
I dont have a schedule really, so I cant compare or give advice according to what we do Chat Icon

That does sound like a long time though, and since he had a dry diaper, def keep an eye on it. As long as he's not fussy, or seems to be uncomfortable or in pain, dont worry too much. trust your mommy instincts as to when to call the dr. he'll be fine Chat Icon

I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it. I have to see how much he drinks tonight and what his diaper is like overnight. He usually has 4 bottles during the day along with the food except for the last one. He's been fine with it.

I really do have a hunch that he may be starting to teeth again but I have to see how the next day or two goes.

Re: Don't know why this is happening...

I don't even know when to attempt feeding him next. He finally took the last bottle at 1:45. Don't know if I should do at 6, 6:30 or 7. But then that will have to be it for the evening because I can't be feeding him 4 hours later at 11. Which he may not want to eat then. So far today he's drank 6 ounces and only had 3 wet diapers.

Re: Don't know why this is happening...

What time does he usually get up? Marron also only eats 4x per day. She usually has the following schedule

7:30 - cereal + 1/2 jar fruit + 6oz. bottle
11:30 - cereal + 1/2 jar veggies + 6oz. bottle
3:30 - 6oz. bottle
7:30 - 1/2 jar meat + 1/2 jar veggie + 6oz. bottle

Sometimes these times get pushed back based on when she gets up and when she naps. If she naps until later in the day and that 3:30 bottle gets pushed until closer to 5pm, I'll only give her 4oz so that she will be hungry again around 7:30-8pm in order to get her back on schedule.

It sounds to me like he may be more tired than he is hungry. Maybe try moving his feedings earlier and putting him down earlier. This may help him finish all his meals.

Well he actually did better when I fed him at 6:15 pm he had 5 oz plus his solids. Then he actually did eat again at 10:15. He had 4 oz this time.

I want to put him down earlier but his feeding schedules changes depending on when he gets up in the morning and how much he naps during the day.

This morning was good too. Now lets see how the next feeding goes.
