Downs syndrome testing????
Has anyone turned down the testing for downs syndrome? My husband and I are debating whether or not to have it done. I am a very nervous person and if god forbid something came back positive, I would be a wreck for the 9 months more than likely effecting the baby in a worse way. Also, what are the options if god forbid they did see something wrong?
I was just wondering if anyone has refused to have it done?

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
I had it with my first and got a false positive, so with the twins I refused it.

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
If you have the test done and it shows that there is a chance the baby has Downs, your dr will send you for an amnio which is pretty much 100% accurate in determining if the baby does infact have Downs. You wont have to wait until the baby is born to find out.
The screening test does have a possibility of coming back as a false positive, but amnio can rule that out.
My test was done and came back great so we elected not to have the amnio done.

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
We had it because it was it offered to us and a non invasive test (nuchal translucency). The results wouldn't have changed our minds either way but it is nice to know if there was a problem to be prepared.

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
I did not do the ultrascreen which I think is what you are talking about. Regardless of what the outcome would have been, I wouldn't have gotten an amino and I am not terminating.
I am still debating on whether or not to do the other one, I don't know the name but it's the blood test done between 15-18 weeks. That one shows a bit more as far as chromosomal defects. Since some things can be prepared for at delivery, like spina bifia (sp), I may have this done. I still would not have an aminio though.

That same blood test showed that I was at high risk for a Downs Syndrome baby and I had to have the Amnio done and it came back normal. Those blood tests I was told are not that accurate and tend to come up with a lot of false positives. So for me I wouldn't trust those blood tests, but that's just the way I feel. The Amnio is like 100% sure.

That had the same problem with the blood test. So I went for the amnio and everything was perfect.

I turned it down. I didn't want to hear any false positives.

I could not go on the rest of my pregnancy wondering if the baby was going to be downs or not

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
I am really torn on this one. My doctor recommended I take it (it has to be done between weeks 11 and 13 - I think?) so I don't have very long to make this decision. I obviously want to know so I could be prepared but I am not sure what I would do if faced with a positive result. DH has said how he feels but I am not sure I could do it

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
i TOOK it, still awaiting results, I am not scared of the results ONLY because the ultrasound looks at the membrane by the spine and that can also tell about Downs and the technician said that all looks good. I was going to take it anyway, but they do measure the membrane, of course the blood work has to be done also.

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
I wasn't told it was an option not to take the test. I had the ultrascreen at week 12 - it was a great sonogram - we got to see so much......

Re: Downs syndrome testing????
You do not have to do this test. It is up to you. I would suggest the non-invasive ultra screen test over the blood test. There are chances that "markers" can show not as bad as the false positive blood test results. You do NOT have to go with the amnio afterwards. I know many people who don't and nothing wrong with that. It is totally up to you, of course.
