This workshop is recommended for those considering international
adoption or waiting for their referral and travel approval, as well
as families already home. Dr. Jane Aronson, a preeminent physician
specializing in the field of international adoption medicine, will
focus on developmental, behavior, attachment and the long term
issues in school. She'll also share her in-depth knowledge of
infectious diseases and the health & developmental issues facing
children in orphanages around the world.

About Dr. Aronson
Jane Aronson was born in Brooklyn in 1951 and grew up on Long
Island. She attended Hunter College in New York City and taught
school for ten years. At thirty-one, she fulfilled her life's dream
to become a physician and entered medical school. She graduated
from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1986
and did a pediatric residency and chief residency in New Jersey,
followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at
Columbia Presbyterian /Babies Hospital in New York City. Between
1992 and 2000, she was the Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
and Director of the International Adoption Medical Consultation
Services at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York.
Since July 2000, Dr. Aronson has been in private practice
as Director of International Pediatric Health Services, in New York
City. She is Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the
Weill Medical College of Cornell University and has evaluated well
over 4,000 children adopted from abroad as an adoption medicine
specialist; she has traveled to orphanages in Russia, Romania,
Bulgaria, China, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Latin America.

Since 1997, she has conducted research and provided education in
orphanages abroad through her 501(3) (c) foundation, Worldwide
Orphans Foundation (WWO). WWO documents the medical and
developmental conditions of children living in orphanages abroad in
order to identify their immediate healthcare needs and to advocate
for their well-being through the Orphan Ranger Program. This
program acts as a "peace corps" for orphanages by commissioning
university students and healthcare professionals to live and work
in orphanages. They are proficient in the native tongue and work in
conjunction with staff to improve the nutritional and emotional
health of abandoned children. Since 1997, Dr. Aronson has funded
Orphan Rangers in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, India,
Ecuador, Viet Nam, China, Serbia, Montenegro, and Ethiopia. WWO has
been granted NGO status in Viet Nam and Ethiopia and has embarked
on training programs for physicians in both countries to care for
HIV-infected orphans.WWO currently treats orphans with HIV/AIDS in
both countries.

She has been featured in many newspapers and magazines, such as The
New Yorker on July 17, 2000, People on November 12, 2001, May 2,
2005, August 1, 2005, and most recently, November 7, 2005; other
features were in The NewYork Times in Jane Brody's Science
Times/Personal Health column on July 22, 2003 and then Jill Brooke's
feature on adoption and home design on July 22, 2004. She is a
recipient of the Congressional Angel of Adoption Award in September
2000. She is the adoptive mom of two sweet boys, Ben, from Viet Nam
and Desalegn, from Ethiopia.

Thanks for posting this. Looks like you have a great doctor set up to review your child's medical records. I wish I could attend, but there's no way I could make it to Brooklyn at that time on a weekday. Fill us in! Chat Icon

I recently read a quote from her in people magazine b/c she's Angelina Jolie's pediatrician. She was talking about how much her daughter's health has improved in the six months or so she's been in the US. It's sad how sick some of these children are in other countries.

Good luck with your adoptions! Chat Icon

Re: Dr. Aronson has a seminar in Brooklyn

Thank you! I am surely going to keep this and use it.

Thankyou, where did you find this?

We hosted 2 girls from the Ukraine this summer, and I know there are quite a few doctors, dentists, therapists, etc... in the surrounding area who offer there services 'free' or at a reduced rate for adopted children of Russia/Ukraine...but I know nothing of the same for China. We took the 2 girls to the doctor (a Russian doctor in Mastic) who was wonderful, the girls were able to communicate in Russian/ukraine...and she did not charge DH a dime and he said it was a wonderful experience...I hope we can find something similar for the china babies.

Re: Dr. Aronson has a seminar in Brooklyn

I will say that Dr. Aronson is not cheap for her consult of the file...something like $350, but IMO her expert opinion is worth the money.
It isn't that much money in the scheme of things when I think about it anyway.
Withrop Hospital has an international adoption practice as well. I can ask my friend, who lives in Huntington, which Ped she used for her little girl when she came home from China. I know that they normally have to re-vaccinate the children so she went to a special ped for a while, but after a few months and no health issues moved to a regular ped.

Dr. Paul Lee at Winthrop is the Doctor that took care of TT when she came home. His quote to us as he grabbed her from me "literally" is I have only seen two kids come from Korea this sick. Thats when he took her over to Winthrop and admitted her. We were there for a week. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND HIM. He was wonderful!

Even when they were going to do the spinal tap on her, he is the one who kept me together.

Long story.... but when I see everyone I will fill you in.
