Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about the Swine Flu shot on the Today show
Dr. Nancy
She says that the swine flu shot is just like the seasonal flu shot - that it is just another strain of flu, and had it appeared earlier in the year, it would have been included in the seasonal flu shot. Because it didn't appear until so late in the season, it was too late to put it in the seasonal shot, so that is why they are separate. So it is not a "new" shot like many people are afraid of. It is "new" just like the seasonal flu shot is new each year.

thanks for posting. I will do whatever the AAP recommends. If they are going to tell our peds to vaccinate, then my DD will get vaccinated.

This is exactly what my ped said when DD had her 3 month (well it was 3.5 months) well visit when we asked about it for DD#1 since she is in preschool. He said he does NOT recommend the rotavirus vaccine b.c the risk of the vaccine he feels is greater than the disease (he says in his 20 years of practice he has never had a child hospitalized for the rotavirus. But that this was made the same as the regular flu shot and if you give your child the regular shot you should give them this one since it is made the same.
I'm still on the fence about giving it - but I do give the regular flu shot (the mercury free version though).

This is exactly what they nurse I work with said. I hate to give DS another shot, though.

Re: Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about the Swine Flu shot on the Today show
I'm curious then - why is there such division about it in the medical community? If it is exactly the same then why are so many peds and OB's that recc the flu shot not recc this one? And why have there been Dr.'s that have spoken out about their concerns about this vaccine?
I haven't had the appts yet but plan to ask my OB and DS's ped these questions as well - if anyone knows the answers please post what you have been told especially if your ped or OB is against it.

Re: Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about the Swine Flu shot on the Today show
i am sorry but if that was true then why are there 2 different shots for it. STILL do not trust it as far as i can throw it and will not let my child be some guinea pig for them, they are scrambling to get these out as fast as they can yet they are telling me it is safe, yeah ok. nah i will pass after they test it A LOT further
eta: that i believe they are now saying this just so people "feel"better in getting it. well i do not trust it at all.

Re: Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about the Swine Flu shot on the Today show
Our good friend who is a research MD specializing in vaccinations (he is in Switzerland and has worked on Malaria vaccines etc.) told us the same thing - that it is essentially just like the seasonal flu vaccine just a different strain. I will take his advice because I trust him both professionally and personally and I know he is not trying to CYA with us.

Re: Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about the Swine Flu shot on the Today show
They why was there a 'test' group?
If its just the 'same'?
Why is my pedi office is more pushing for the swine flu that the regular?
Sorry but this is fishy to me.

Re: Dr. Nancy Snyderman talking about the Swine Flu shot on the Today show
I am so on the fence, swine flu and regular flu shot.
I cant imagine my 10 mth old getting 4 more shots before her one year appt. Its just insane....
So I don tknow what to do and what to think with all of this.

I think they had to do the test group to make sure they isolated the strain properly to ensure that the shot actually worked.
Also- I know last week someone had posted an article a pediatrician wrote about adjuvants (sp) and in the United States our shots will not include adjuvants.
I also think they are pushing the swine flu shot more because, based on the CDCs projection, the swine flu will be much, much worse than the seasonal flu.

If you read SweethTooth's post it specifically answers this question:

DH and I will be getting this shot and the regular flu shot.
For DD, we will go by what her ped suggests; I am pretty sure they will want her to get it.
