Those following the news on the Swine flu, questions
What is the consensus? Are they saying it WILL definitely come back and when?Or is it here already?
Do they feel its going to get more severe and mutate?
Do they feel it's milder or stronger than the regular seasonal flu?
What do you know about the vaccine?

Re: Those following the news on the Swine flu, questions
The only info I have is..... I teach in NYC and they said it was going to come back full blast once the kids returned to school. Its been 2 weeks and my school is fine! ((Knock on wood!!!!))
I have heard it is not worse than the seasonal flu, it just effects younger people more than the seasonal one does.
Sorry, I know that's not 'official' news...... Try during a search on the nytimes website!

yes, it is already back. there have been cases on some college campuses. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/booster_shots/2009/09/college-swine-flu-cases-continue-to-grow.html
Scientists are not sure what will happen. There is a chance it could mutate and become much more serious.
As of right now, it still appears to be a rather mild form of influenza, especially in the U.S. However, it affects different age groups than the seasonal flu.

Re: Those following the news on the Swine flu, questions
I saw something about it on the news yesterday and they said it never really went away over the summer like they thought it would. Apparently, this is a good thing b/c it means they had more time to observe it in action.
I don't know too much about the vaccine other than what "they" have been saying ...essentially that's it's perfectly safe. I've also heard that supply will be low and it will most likely not be available to everyone, only high risk cases, at least for a while.

Re: Those following the news on the Swine flu, questions
I don't think it ever went away. I'm in the healthcare industry and monitor several listservs for healthcare workers. I read the CDC is projecting 91,000 deaths this year from H1N1, versus 36,000 from the regular flu. A healthy 43 year old nurse recently died in Knoxville, TN from H1N1. This thing can affect anyone and everyone.
Here's a summary of information from a company who is monitoring the situation (I don't know much about the company):
As of Sept. 28th 26 states are reporting "widespread influenza activity", compared to 21 states the week prior.
On Sept. 25th 42 schools across 8 states were closed due to flu activity.
The government is gearing up to track reactions to the vaccine. (This alone says to me that they don't know the affects of this vaccine and we're just test animals for it.)
There is a lot of talk about the vaccine going to illegal immigrants and the poor because they are less likely to seek treatment and can therefore spread the H1N1 virus.
