drinking and ttc?
what is everyone doing in regards to this.... we are beginning to ttc this month ------ right now i have AF, probably the last day of it and am sitting here with my cosmo enjoying it while checking out LIF.... i was just thinking this may be my last drink for awhile...
so is anyone else not drinking at all while they are ttc? not drinking just during the 2ww or just not once they get a BFP?
just curious

Re: drinking and ttc?
DH & I just had this conversation at dinner this evening. i'm in the 2WW and he feels VERY strongly that i shouldnt drink. i dont really see the harm in 1 glass of wine occasionally during TTC but he's admamant about it.

I drink too. My OB/GYN said that I don't need to change any behaviors until I see a BFP.

Re: drinking and ttc?
Having lived in Europe for a few years I found it interesting how strict the rules are over here are regarding pregnant women drinking.
In Europe where it's common to drink wine with dinner or lunch, pregnant women there don't adhere to the rule quite as much. In fact I've seen visibly pregnant women drinking while having lunch or dinner. 1 glass of wine is ok for them, although they don't drink hard liquor.
On the other hand, they are very much against eating raw meat and even vegetable. So salad is out. Just an interesting difference in our culture.

I was wondering about this too. Overall, I try to tone it down a bit especially if we are out. I just get really paranoid...

i saw that too in England. My best friend's family lives in England and Ireland, and I went a few times with her, b/c I am close to her family as well. I remember her cousin's wife was pregnant and we were sitting around drinking beer. She had one and I remember my friend and I were in disbelief and talked about it for a while.

I live in England and I have a 1 year old who was born here and we are advised that we can have something like 4-5 units of alcohol a week, so thats SMALL glasses of wine..but its not frowned upon at all here. This is being reviser currently, it was in the news a few weeks ago. My midwife advised me several times to drink a few pints of guinness when my iron levels were low. We aren't advised against eating raw meat or veggies....I don't know where you got that from, however the Brits only like their meat on the charred, leathery side...and also, I don't know really if anyone outside of Asia eats raw meat (I could be wrong there...but whatever) We eat lots of salads and tons of veggies, something like 7% of the population in the UK is vegetarian!!
I would say that pregnancy here in the UK is very relaxed, we don't do any of the tests that you guys do, we don't see doctors unless we are high risk. We have a wonderful midwife led service where after you have your baby, they come out to your house everyday for up to 28 days (thats even on weekends!!) and as I have said before...the maternity benefits are wonderful! I have returned to work this week after a 13 month leave!

Re: drinking and ttc?
I made myself crazy during the 2WW with drinking and what to eat and all that and the stress of that made me physically ill. The next month I acted totally normal, drank, ate sushi, had coffee, etc and I enjoyed the 2WW and now that I got a BFP I can stop all the bad stuff.

Re: drinking and ttc?
From what I read, you don't share a bloodstream with the baby at that point anyway - so drinking (although I certainly wouldn't get wasted) shouldn't affect the fetus.

Re: drinking and ttc?
Once we are TTC I will not drink while in the two week wait. To me it is not worth it--I can live without it for two weeks. But, if AF shows all bets are off! Bring on the vino!

Me too. A glass of wine helps me relax at the end of a long day. I am going gong nuts, but not stopping until I see that BFP.

Re: drinking and ttc?
I've debated this back and forth with my DH (dr) who felt very strongly about not drinking.. and in the end, I think I won't drink.
Fact is, that the first few months of the babies development cycle is the most important month. Thus, many women are pregnant for at least a month before they even know it. Also, at this point, we just don't know what alcohol does.. yes, we don't share blood, but... the brain is the earliest part of development, and no one really knows how thats influenced by alcohol in the mothers system.
Also, as per Europe, US also had lenient rules - as did the rest of the world- for PG women, and there are a lot of cases of FSS, and others. For me, I just wouldn't want a 'possibility' that is why I wouldn't drink during PG.
EDT: I've knows parents who drank hard during the first few weeks of their PG (they didn't know) and their babies turned out HEALTHY and beautiful and perfect. However, I don't know how many in the world overall had some problems...

Re: drinking and ttc?
Well I got bombed the night before I got my BFp (we had just moved into our new house and were having a bbq)
I thought it was strange that I go so drunk, so quick...sure enough, the next day, I got my BFP. I would not worry about it. The baby does not share your blood stream until about 8 weeks I believe

Re: drinking and ttc?
I will probably stop drinking when TTC. I don't drink much as it is, but I will stop then, unless we are out for a birthday or something, then I will have 1 glass of wine while out (unless I know I am preggo).

Re: drinking and ttc?
I drank during MOST of my 2ww's. Couldnt not drink if I wanted to stay sane. I drank lighlty during my IVF 2WW....and Im Pg and my baby is fine......
Moderation is the key and alcohol can affect fertility in small ways, btu once your in the 2ww it has NO affect on anything, and no affect even if you were PG, you would find out before a blood stream in a baby was even developed.
