San Fran is about 400 miles from LA. 400 divided by 60 mph is about 6.7 hours. You can go faster or slower obviously and the traffic in LA (especially driving up from San Diego) can be a nightmare.

My mom and her husband drive from San Jose to San Diego and it takes them between 9-12 hours depending on traffic.

San Fran is about 8 hours from Los Angeles.
I have done this drive in less than 6 hours going down I-5.
I think this could only be at off hours AND speeding
I lived in SF for a long time. I've done the trip a couple of times. The best time was when I drove down at about 6 am on a Saturday morning. We hit LA after about 6 hours and SD is another 2-3. The trouble with estimating this trip is the LA traffic. We hit traffic going through LA at 11:00 am on a Saturday morning. The traffic can be awful going through, even on I-5.
So, I would say if you are lucky, you could make it in 8-9 hours, but if you hit a lot of traffic, it could be longer.
ETA: The speed limit on I-5 is 65, and it might even be 75 in some areas.
