driving people to the airport - DH vent
Next thursday, DH and DD are flying to Florida, I'm driving them to the airport. No problem. On Saturday morning i'm flying down, my flight is at 6am. i mention to DH that i'm going to have to put the car into long term. He freaks out saying that its a waste of money and that my parents should be driving me.
my parents would have to get up at 3:30 in the morning and drive 1/2 an hour to my house and then another 1/2 an hour to LGA. I just think its rude and ridiculous to expect them or anyone else to drive me to the airport at that time. Plus, I come home at midnight on tuesday!
i'm so annoyed with him right now.

I agree with you, its a lot to ask someone to drive you to the airport for a 6am flight.
What about taking a shuttle? Its about $15 or a car service/taxi?

Re: driving people to the airport - DH vent
I would leave the car or call car service
If my parents offered I would say ok, but I would never ask them to drive or pick us up at those times

You are right I wouldn't put anyone "out" at that hour, I'd take the car. What is the price for LTP at LGA?
I'm curious because it used to be like $9 a day.

Did you check the price of a shuttle service? It might be less than long term parking. My FIL used to rent a car sometimes and return it at the aiport, b/c the one day rental fee was less than parking !

Re: driving people to the airport - DH vent
Im sorry, I agree with your DH I personally expect family members to drive me to the airport so we don't have to leave cars unattended in long term parking. I don't like spending the money to park and I like a warm car when I get home. Then again, my family doesn't mind cause I would do the same for them.

ITA. We have had my FIL drive us to the airport for a VERY early flight and I always felt so bad.
I much rather just take a car service than do long term parking.

Re: driving people to the airport - DH vent
DH and I ALWAYS drive all of our family to the airport. NONE of them ever offer to drive us when it's our turn. Now DH and I have learned to park our car on the block we used to live in (In forest hills) and have a car service pick us up from there. Then we have a cab bring us back to there and leave from there to head home.
I don't know where you live but it might be cheaper/ safer to leave your car home and have a car service take you.

Avistar off-site parking has pretty good rates. DH uses them when he travels to Asia.
or
I would do a car service. Check out USLimos.

I agree with you - I would never even accept an offer of someone to drive me to the airport at that hour. I would choose between a car service or long term parking based on cost and call it a day.

Re: driving people to the airport - DH vent
My parents always drive us to the airport. Or my aunt and uncle. When they go away even if its at 3 am we always Drive them. I don't think it's all that wrong to ask but like I said maybe it's because we return the favor.
I would ask them. Say I know it's really early and if you can't it's ok but.... Do you think you would be able to drive me to the airport.

Unfortunately this won't help since you're going out of LGA, but we always book our flights out of JFK if possible so we can take the LIRR to the Airtrain.

Re: driving people to the airport - DH vent
Another option could be to stay at one of the LGA hotels on Friday night - they are pretty reasonably priced and I believe some offer free or lower cost long term parking plus shuttles to the airport.

Re: driving people to the airport - DH vent
Thanks everyone, at least i know i'm not crazy.
my parents or his brothers usually drive us, but at that time of day, i refuse to ask. Parking is something like $20 a day, so it would prob be about $80, car service is $80 plus tip one way!

yeah, in our case, my parents just automatically do it - no matter what time to save us money

i agree - i don't think it's a big deal to ask them, but maybe that's because i've done it for friends/family in the past
